The fiction story “The Icebound Land” by John Flanagan, it follows two characters, Halt and Will. Will, an ranger aprentice, tries to escape from his captivity of the Skandians with Evanlyn, the princess of Arulean. Halt acomponies Horace to find and save Will from getting traded away. The theme of this story is to save someone important to you at all cost. First of all, this story takes place in the Skandian’s place, with Will and Evanlyn waiting for their fate while Halt and Horace are on the way to save them. Next, in Will’s captivity, Jarl Erak feels some sympathy and tries to get Evanlyn and Will into a place where they can be together, even if its slave labor. This is mainly shown by Halt and Evanlyn through their actions to save Will. For example,” Halt knew the consequenses, but he decided that he must keep his promise to Will. Halt went into the bar saying things he never would say if the situation wasn’t so desire.”(Flanagan 38). Halt went in the bar and said treason to the king, so he could get a hopeful way to save Will. This shows how Halt takes an extremely dangerous aproach just to save Will, who mad his old life fun again. In addition, Evanlyn also tries her hardest to get Will and her to safety, This is shown like,”She draped them around his shoulders, then sat behind him and pulled the rough wool around herself. She took one of his hands in hers and rubbed his fingers. They felt like ice. she smiled at him in encouragement.” Evanlyn is trying to get herself and Will back to safety and she is dealing with quite the troubles. This shows how Evanlyn really cares about Will and is really trying to help him. The theme is portayed by these two characters who really care about Will and risk many things to save
