What started off as a harmless dance evolved into the exclamation of choice for many millennials and a testament to the power social media has on the population. Yeet is a word created by and for the internet. Yeet is said so often, yet not many people know its meaning or origin. However, to its users, its true definition is irrelevant, and it goes against the true spirit of the word, which is self-expression and to make every experience one that is positive. The history of the word “yeet” is a perplexing and unclear timeline of many different people claiming they are the creator of the word. One claim is from the source of the word’s popularity, a viner named Maleek. On March 8th of 2014, he posted a vine of a six-year old viner named Lil Terrio dancing, and it was captioned with, “#Yeet.” This vine prompted another viner, Lil Meatball, to make a video of him dancing with the surrounding people chanting “ya yeet ya” in the background. The versatility of the word helped its popularity because of its ease of implementation in any sentence. Additionally, yeet has evolved into a very ambiguous verb.
