More than 4,000 years ago, Greeks played a game called episkyros. Teams kicked and tossed the ball, trying to score by knocking the ball over their opponents’ end line. Ancient soccer balls were made from skulls or animal bladders. Even today, where soccer balls are too expensive, people make do with net- wrapped rubber balls. The place where football was first created was in China. Cuju, a game meaning “kick the ball with foot,” was played more than 2,000 years ago and is considered an early version of soccer. Soccer- type games were played by groups and clubs all over the world, but standard rules for the game didn’t exist until 1863, when 11 football clubs in England met to form the Football Association.
