The Hero's Journey To Santiago In 'The Alchemist'

Olympics Games Rio 2016 is on in full swing and the name Michael Phelps has cropped up several times during the past few days. Just recently he won his 19th Olympic gold medal. But getting there was not easy for him. I read an article recently about his journey so far and could find similarities in his journey to those of Santiago in The Alchemist.

As a young boy, Santiago dreamt of seeing the world and of travelling to lands afar. His family wanted him to be a priest, which would mean he had to put down roots and that was not acceptable to Santiago. The first step that he took towards his pursuit was to tell his father that he wanted to travel, a pursuit that most people of his time would consider foolish. That was happiness to him and the only way he could think of to pursue his happiness at that point was to become a shepherd. So he did. …show more content…

Santiago replies that he was meant to save the oasis. The man then tests Santiago’s courage and tell him that if Santiago manages to stay alive till sunset the next day, then he should come find him. Santiago asks him where he could be found and the man points towards the south. Santiago realizes that the man in the alchemist. The next morning, although the oasis is attacked, all but one of the intruders were killed, thanks to Santiago’s predictions and prompt action. In payment, Santiago receives fifty gold pieces and is asked to be the counselor for the oasis.

Santiago then sets out on yet another journey, to see the alchemist. The alchemist tells Santiago that he was going to point him in the direction of the treasure. Once again Santiago is at crossroads. He replies that he has already found his treasure, namely the money he received from the crystal shop and the chieftain, a camel, and also the woman he loves, Fatima.
