While reading through The Glass Castle, written by Jeannette Walls, a common theme occurred throughout the story: bullying. During Jeannette’s early childhood, she encountered bullying almost daily in a few places that her family had lived. Bullying is a topic known around the world but it is also something that is easily forgotten about. Bullying happens more often than anyone can count, and can have lasting and even deadly effects that some people do not think about. The definition of bullying uses broad statements to define the actual meaning. Because of this, people may view the definition differently than others. Bullying can range from physical violence to verbal abuse to even cyberbullying. Most people do not realize how common cyberbullying actually is. Over half of teens and adolescents have been bullied online and almost the same number have engaged in the bullying (“Cyber Bullying Statistics”). Although bullying itself can be violent behavior, often times violence is an actual after effect of the harm done by the bullying. Because of the depression or low self esteem after a bullying incident, both bullies and victims sometimes feel the need to lash out violently in order to handle the situation at hand. Although this is not necessary, in some minds this is the only way to handle a situation.
