In the book, ‘The Giver’ by Lois Lowry, the theme’s are probably the most important thing that can be discussed. What are the theme’s, you may ask, well in my opinion, the two major themes are being an individual means knowing when to conform and when to rebel, which basically means if you are independant you know the right time to stay together and when to do something on your own. The other theme is humanity cannot exist without memories and feelings, which basically means memories are forever, you can’t get rid of them, but with memories comes feelings for you can’t feel nothing when riding the rollercoaster, which is life. Riding a bike downhill, now that’s something to experience. The wind gets tangled in your hair as you accelerate down and your stomach does flip-flops. You feel excited and nervous at the same time, but in the end it feels like you are flying through the air. You can’t experience true emotions without actually experiencing them. That’s why memories can’t exist without feelings, because without any fun, why would it make sense to remember it? If you didn’t have any memories with feelings, then I would question whether or not you are human. It’s human nature after all to remember and have feelings. So basically, the book is based on this one character named Jonas, who lives in this community with no feelings, or pain, memories, colors, animals, music, and a place of no changing weather patterns. It’s honestly pretty crazy, but anyway, Jonas is an adoptive child that lives with his parents, a Nurturer (dad), and a Law/Justice worker (mom) and his younger sister, Lily, who was also adopted because all children are born through birthmothers. Anyway, they have a huge ceremony in the month of December where the kids basically do a step-up day, and become a new number. (EX: a 3, or an 11) Each year, the kids get something, like a haircut or a bicycle, but the year of 12 is when you are assigned your job and you enter the community as an adult. Now mind you, when they become this adult they are only about 12-13 years old, but anyway, they do their celebration for the ceremony of 12, but they skipped Jonas and it causes him and his community to panic, but it turns out that Jonas hadn’t been assigned, he had been selected… to be the next Receiver. There's only one receiver and he trains in private with the past receiver, who becomes The Giver. The role of Receiver is to receive the memories of the past and hold them until the next receiver is chosen. As Jonas receives these memories, he
