The definition of heroism and altruism can be considered differently in a contrast. The definition of ‘altruism’ is “feelings and behavior that show a desire to help other people and a lack of selfishness”, whereas ‘heroism’ is “great courage”, defined by Merriam-Webster. Where a hero has the great courage to “save the day”, altruism is the compassion of helping others. Although there are heroes who are unselfish, there can be some who do it for the fame. There are different qualities when it comes to realizing what a hero truly is.
Even if it is an imaginary superhero or an everyday rescuer, everybody has idolized a hero. The phrase being a hero represents the concept of heroism because it involves risk and is initiated without the expectation of any material gain. Heroism is an inner quality of courage and audacity, that an individual expresses even when it is believed the odds are against success. There are about as many different definitions of heroism as there are heroes. According to Merriam-Webster 's, Heroism is defined as heroic conduct especially as exhibited when fulfilling a high purpose or attaining a noble end (Merriam-Webster 's).
Remember the gift you promise me, and ... ... middle of paper ... ...made the impossible no longer impossible. Based on the evidence, a message of this epic poem may be “Perfection doesn’t make a hero. What makes him a hero is where his heart truly lies on and the actions he has taken selflessly for the sake of others.” As the poem reveals Odysseus foolish and stubborn action, it also shows Odysseus’s ability to overcome his weaknesses through his dedication as a leader and intelligence. These good qualities of his are shown through every risky action he takes in order to save his men and country. The poem reminds the readers of how the society has been for all these years.
This was the only thing which moved, for the lips of the oldest did not move as they said: ‘Street Sweeper’.” (Rand 26). The Council of Vocations assigned Equality the job of Street Sweeper not because that was his full potential, but because of the potential he had to change the way their society lived. They knew he would change things in their community that they did not want to be changed. In their eyes, he was dangerous. There is a big difference between a role model and a hero. It was expressed best in the article, What Makes A Hero? The Impact of Integrity on Admiration and Interpersonal Judgment, “Doing the right thing is a basis for acts of heroism and laudable accomplishment but often involves personal sacrifice. Doing the expedient thing is a basis for acts of self-indulgence and opportunism but often at a cost to others. ” (Schlenker, B. R., Weigold, M. F., & Schlenker, K. A., 2008) In the article, What do heroes look like?
“Heroes represent the best of ourselves, respecting that we are human beings. A hero can be anyone from Gandhi to your classroom teacher, anyone who can show courage when faced with a problem. A hero is someone who is willing to help others in his or her best capacity,” this is how Ricky Martin describes heroes. This quote indicates that it doesn't matter who you are you can be a hero whether you do something big or small it will still have an impact on someone or something. Heroism can not only mean being positive but also someone who puts other people before them, is courageous and is not scared of anything, and also does not make bad decisions.
The truth is that someone isn’t only labeled a hero if they make impossible feats seem easy; they become heroes through their experiences and struggles. It’s there, in that moment, where anyone can show he or she is a hero. Evidently, it takes different qualities in a hero to separate them from the average person. A hero can be any individual that makes sacrifices for the greater good, overcomes internal and external conflict, and is driven by a goal he or she has set. The ability to sacrifice helps distinguish a hero from the average person.
Beowulf shows his friendship in the fact that he didn’t have to come save king Hrothgar’s people, however because he was reaching out and being a friend he wanted to save them from evil. In this instance again Beowulf shows that he deserves to have the title of an epic hero by showing such strong
Joseph Campbell once said “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” This quotes talks about how in order to be a hero, you have to care about other people. It really emphasizes that you cannot be a true hero if you only care about yourself. All traits and functions that people would consider heroic involve others, not just themselves. There are so many heroic traits out there, but 3 are very important. A true hero is courageous, will rescue others in need, and does not look down on people who are not privileged.
