The Giver takes place in areas called communities. Everything about the communities, they’re built so that nothing is different. There isn’t any color, nothing is meant to stand out, and residents of the communities all dress the same and act the same way. The communities are made this way to avoid conflict and disagreement between residents. The communities are futuristic societies that have eliminated all pain, fear, war, and hatred. There is no prejudice, since everyone looks and acts basically the same, and there is very little competition. Everyone is unfailingly polite The main character in the story is a boy names Jonas. The previous Giver had passed all on the memories onto him, making him The Giver. He looks older than he's supposed too because of all the knowledge. He isn't much of a people's person. He spends his days in his living quarters and spends free time by taking long walks throughout the community. From being The Giver, he has experienced positive and negative emotion, triumphs, and failures upon thousands of men, women, children, and animals.
Jonas's father is a nurturer of new children. He was brought up to not value love or compassion, but he does seem to love the new children if they're under his care. He isn't allowed to feel true love and compassion for the new children. He can't feel the pain of releasing them to the other side. At home, Jonas’s father brings home a newchild to foster until he’s ready to return to the Nursery. Jonas forms a special bond with the baby when he finds out that the newchild is a receiver like he and The Giver. As he settles into his new job, The Giver transfers memories of the Community to Jonas. As Jonas experiences new feelings like pain, sadness, loss, and Hate, he snaps.
