The Gettysburg Address

On November 19, 1863, Abraham Lincoln gave one of the famous speeches after the Battle of the Gettysburg which was the turning point of the war. The Gettysburg Address became famous because his speech aroused the equality as stated in the Declaration of Independence. It also restated the Civil War away from a war for the union, but a war for equal rights of all people, democracy. He made this speech during the war to make sure that people were taking actions of the war and to honor the fallen soldiers who had died in this war. Abraham Lincoln argues that the Civil War is still worth fighting because a lot of soldiers died for the ideal of the democracy and for unity of the nation.
The Civil War was a war between the North and the South. Their different arguments caused the war and made them apart from each other. However, United States was one nation in the olden days. According to the Gettysburg Address, “Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation, conceived in Liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal”(p.35). The Founding Fathers brought this new nation to be conceived in Liberty and dedicated that “all men are created equal.” This quotation implies the unification of United States in olden days. The Declaration of Independence refers United States as a whole, which means both North and South were one nation. By referring to the phrase from the Declaration of Independence to the audience, Abraham Lincoln reminds them that the United States was founded as one nation and convinces the South to come back as one nation just like the past.

By Abraham Lincoln making speech, some people were inspired by him that they took actions in the war. Although Abraham Lincoln did not directly said the war still worth fighting, he directly said that those people who are the livings should continue the unfinished work which refers to the democracy and the unification of the nation. Abraham Lincoln argues that the Civil War still worth fighting to honor the fallen soldiers who sacrificed themselves in the war for their beloved nation’s unification and democracy. Although Abraham Lincoln gave the The Gettysburg Address long time ago, it is still remembered by those who are educated because he rededicated human equality of the nation as written on the Declaration of Independence to the audience.
