What is Hip Hop? You may ask, “What is Hip Hop?” the answer to this question is both complicated and simple. Its’ origins extend back thousands of years and now is a way to express one’s self. The answer is not simply a “Genre” of music, but a way of life, a culture, and what gave hope to those who were hopeless. It has a very complex learning curve to the average person, but easy to understand, not because you learned it, but experienced it. The basic properties to understand Hip Hop shall and will be explained, which will include; Where did it come from, When it was it created, The Four Pillars of Hip Hop, and its’ culture. So where did it come from? Well, it depends on how you look at it. For one, in the 1960’s and 1970’s, a gang known as “The Ghetto Brothers” started the Hip Hop culture after the death of the gang’s peacemaker and was a way for the gangs to come together, to live in peace, and a way to settle each other’s differences with dance offs instead of mindlessly shooting at each other. On the other hand, the elements of hip hop date back to the early days. The Griots, a group of storytellers that recorded their history in song and when sing, they included elements used by modern day rappers. Breakdancing, unlike the other elements, was created out of anger. Why anger you ask, because it was developed from a chain of events. Starting with the creation of the Ghetto Brothers, then the introduction of guns into the gang violence, next the death of the Brother’s Peacemaker, finally the treaty of all the gangs in the Bronx. These events spawned breakdancing, because everyone still has their differences, especially the gangs. So breakdancing was a way for the gangs to settle disputes and rivalries instead of mindlessly shooting each
