The Field of Veterinary Medicine: Communication and Controversies Veterinary Medicine is a competitive field, whether you are going for your Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or to be a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT). There will be competitive programs you will need to do well in to be able to continue working at getting a degree to this field. A veterinarian or vet is a professionally skilled worker licensed in providing a wide range of medical care to diverse types of animals. Veterinary technicians are the doctors’ right hand man; if the doctor needs it the tech will provide it. Technicians make anywhere between 12-15 dollars an hour depending on how good you are at your job (DeLong). In May 2013 the median wage was $14.66 an hour and $30,500 a year (Statistics). Being a technician has its pros and cons. Pros including helping sick animals in need and educating the animal owner on how to better care for their companions and cons include the lack of pay technicians receive and having to put down sick animals or having one die on the surgery table (DeLong). Technicians go through a two-year program and receive an Associates Degree in Applied Sciences. Many of the everyday jobs the technicians do in a day include assisting in surgeries, dentals, animal recovery and also reading tests such as ear cytology’s, skin scrapings, and fecal reading …show more content…

Most people see veterinarians as being doctors of animals and they are there to save animals and help them when they are sick and that is what veterinarians are for but sometimes I wish people could really see what veterinarians go through in a day. As I have past experience in the field of veterinary medicine, I was fortunate enough to see behind the scenes. When I was working one of the first things the boss will tell you is to not show emotion in front of the patient’s owner, and that’s something very hard to control. Sometimes are easier then others to hold back the tears but I know there’s days that the bathroom is just a place to go cry for a good two minutes and then have to pull yourself back together again. And having emotions is something that can never be resolved. Everyday as you work in the field you do learn to cope with the sadness of people crying when they lose their companion or sometimes even when they lose their best friend. You learn to not get as involved with the personal relationships of the animal owner, because you know one day the animal will eventually die.
