The Error of Man Man has shown his ability to do great things. He has been able to evolve and grow throughout the generations. One thing that has never changed through the years of growth is that man is his own worst enemy. No one else has made man suffer as much as himself. A great example of man versus himself is Jack London’s To Build a Fire, where a newcomer to the land decides that he will begin his journey to make it to the next camp but in the end he becomes his worst enemy because of his lack of wisdom, his arrogance, and nature he dies from hypothermia. Knowledge is something that man has acquired through the decades. It has allowed man to accomplish a multitude of different task. These are the arrogant young men that are deaf to the advice from older and wiser men. They will more likely be the cause of their own undoing. Just like them the man in Jack London’s To Build a Fire is arrogant enough to become the cause of his own death. He is just like any other young and naive unable to follow advice from someone much older and wiser. An old man has suggested that he should not travel alone at the current temperature. The man thinks the old man is just being womanly and decide to go out on this journey on his own. The man is a newcomer to this land yet he thinks he knows better than this man who has probably made this venture more than once in his life. His arrogance doesn’t stop here he is determined to reach his destination at a certain time. This leads him into risking his life by taking a shorter route that is filled with danger. Being confident is great but it’s when you’re too confident that you don’t take any precautions when it becomes a problem. In this man’s dying hour he has realization that he was wrong and that there were multiple signs trying to warn him and stop this insane journey but he was to blind by his arrogance and now it’s too late. He was given three warnings that if he would have followed the outcome would have been different. The first warning is given to him by the old man to not go on this journey alone. The second is his spit turning to ice foreshadowing colder temperature. Lastly his husky hesitating to move forward to begin the journey. As said before man is his own worst
