Pioneer settlement began with the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854m progressed

westward in waves and retreated, and ended with the Dust Bowl and the Depression of

the 1930s. Although abandoned land was quickly put back into cultivation as soon as

the rains returned and prices recovered after 1940, the era of pioneer settlement was

over. A region of net in-migration became a region of net out-migration. The two main

problems that have faces settlers in the Great Plains are climatic variability and sheer

distance. The climatic hazards are many-extreme summer and winter temperatures,

blizzards, hail, and high winds—but the key factor is periodic drought. Periods of 35

days or more without rain can be expected each year, and extended
