From the dawn of the Enlightenment Western European culture was changing due to the revolutionary new ideas that were changing. With the social change going on, political change was as ever evident as time went on. With these changes rooted in social change went out, the effects of the Enlightenment can be seen over 18th century Western Europe and beyond.
During the Enlightenment, it was a time when educated intellectuals came together to discuss political, religious, economic, and social questions. From these discussions some people questioned the types of monarchies and which would be better for the society. These people were revolutionary thinkers that became known as philosophes, or philosophers, who brought new ideas on how to better understand and improve their society. They were all modern thinkers who had the best interest in society. Although each philosopher had their own individual ideas, they all focused on one common theme, which was equality and human rights.
During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were also known as the enlightenment or the age of reason because of its new ideas and innovations. Europe experienced a series of the drastic changes and revolutions. This altered the way people lived and their standards of living. The people responsible for this were known as the philosophes. They questioned the world and suggested answers to many problems. Notable philosophes include John Locke, Voltaire, Adam Smith, and Mary Wollstonecraft along with many others. The Enlightenment philosophes worked to advance society and improve life for people. Although many philosophes worked to improve the conditions of the people, they sought to do this by different means. John Locke worked to stabilize the political aspects of Europe.
The Enlightenment was the time period that followed the Scientific Revolution and was characterized as the "Age of Reason". This was the time when man began to use his reason to discover the world around him rather than blindly follow what the previous authority, such as the Church and Classical Philosophers, stated to be true. The Enlightenment was a tremendously broad movement that dominated much of the European thinking during the 18th century, however, several core themes that epitomized the movement were the idea of progress, skepticism against the Church, and individualism.
John Locke was an English philosopher who lived during 1632-1704. In political theory he was equally influential. Contradicting Hobbes, Locke maintained that the original state of nature was happy and characterized by reason and tolerance; all human beings were equal and free to pursue "life, health, liberty, and possessions." The state formed by the social contract was guided by the natural law, which guaranteed those inalienable rights. He set down the policy of checks and balances later followed in the U.S. Constitution; formulated the doctrine that revolution in some circumstances is not only a right but an obligation; and argued for broad religious freedom.
The Enlightenment is a unique time in European history characterized by revolutions in science, philosophy, society, and politics. These revolutions put Europe in a transition from the medieval world-view to the modern western world. The traditional hierarchical political and social orders from the French monarchy and Catholic Church were destroyed and replaced by a political and social order from the Enlightenment ideals of freedom and equality(Bristow, 1). Many historians, such as Henry Steele Commager, Peter Gay, have studied the Enlightenment over the years and created their own views and opinions.
The Enlightenment challenged what was previously thought to be the way of life. Prior to the Enlightenment whatever you were born into that was it, you were stuck and had no say in if you could receive power or money, you were the king’s subject, but the Enlightenment changed the role of the people from subject to citizen. This switch gave the people abilities that were never seen before 1450. It became a change and with the movement from subject to citizen, questions started surfacing and with those questions came action, and with that action came a new era for human rights. Human rights were improved across the board, from African Americans to women to the citizen. Without the Enlightenment some powers that needed to be changed like that of slavery may never had been
In chapter ten, The Enlightenment: A Worldview in Action, Wells discuss how the Enlightenment was a positive movement for history. The Enlightenment was a time of new ideas of viewing the world. People began to see it in mechanical term and mathematical language. Through these terms, people were allowed to know and explain the workings of the world, and soon, rationalism was developed. Wells describes rationalism as a worldview based on science. This way of thinking start to develop in the seventeenth century with the Scientific Revolution; however, it didn’t take off into the eighteenth century with the Enlightenment. The views of philosophers such as Voltaire are considered to be the source of many essential changes in countries such as America and France. His views on religion, government, and freedom are what people remember most because they have not died out in today’s society.
Adam Smith had some particular views that helped shape the economy today. He believed in an environment with free competition that functioned in unity with the common natural laws. All of Smith’s work in the “Wealth of Nations” became an ideal lead for the economic world hundreds of years ago. It is still today looked at by numerous scholars and taught by many. Even though many people believe that Smith thought that no government was the best government, however he did have a few areas where he believed there should be government intervention.

Smith also delved into the dynamics of the labor market, wealth accumulation, and productivity growth. His work was later discovered to be precise, after the Great depression took place allowing the governments interference by reducing taxes and increasing governments spending.
This would first and foremost begin with Smith’s interest in accumulation of wealth through labor. Smith believe in a distinct difference of mental versus manual labor. According to Smith, specialization helps in the division of labor because people become faster and more productive when they are only focused on one task/job. With one-task individuals improve dexterity, which saves time and they become innovative. If people are skilled and productive in their individual fields of work, it creates advanced societies. More and more people specialized in their field of production only creates more product; more product leads to greater wealth, which indeed is Smith’s number one
