“Nice going, you have succeeded by passing your driving test.” Apparently, the age of 16 is when people get their drivers’ license. Some think that this age requirement is a bit too high but some more think its drastically too low. Currently the age where teens can receive their license is way too low. There are three stages of getting a license and people shouldn’t be qualified to receive their license until they reach 20. The cost, insurance, and the age is the reason why the current driving age need to be raised.
By having the drivers age at 16 there are a lot of accidents. The total of accidents by teenage driving is more than drivers that are older and had greater experience. If the age of driving was raised a little higher this would lower the number of accidents because people would have a greater compassion of what they are doing. At the age of 16 parents still consider you as a child. With that, they charge parents a thousand dollars or even more in the short six months than if you didn’t have a teenage driver. At the age of 20 they won’t consider you as a child anymore and the rate of insurance won’t rise. Insurance is harder to control when you are 16 because, it is way too expensive and goes up if you have poor grades and if in any accidents. With the high rates and criteria, it’s hard and sadly expensive, certainly during our time. Depending on your grades in school is a result in your rate. Students with good grades will have better rates than students that have bad grades. Sometimes it’s not always the student fault. They probably couldn’t understand what they teacher is explaining to them and sometimes scared to ask for help. They would fail by this and would be charged
Drivers Beware For years, fiery debates over whether the driving age for teens should be sixteen or eighteen captured the nation. Sixteen year-olds have a legitimate argument for keeping the age where it stands, but statistics show that sixteen year olds are not responsible enough to drive, and that more practice is needed before anyone should get a driver’s license. However, from the looks of it, it seems that legislation is going to make the legal driving age eighteen. Sixteen year olds do have a valid argument as to why the age should stay where it is now. Endersby argues that while many teens are in fact safe and careful drivers, they should not be punished for the bad behavior of others.
The driving age should stay at 16. Although, not many people think that it should stay at 16, but instead that it should increase. This should not happen because certain responsibilities are given to an 16 year old that involves a car. Changing the driving age to a higher age, could infect a lot of things. Some of them have jobs, younger siblings, or even disabled parents. If we raise the driving age, then who would be able to drive around the teen’s disable parent if no one else is able too. Being able to get your license at 16 should not be a given, it should be a decision made by parents if their child acts mature enough. Yes, it frees up the parents time and makes the teen more responsible but losing a child to a car crash is unthinkable. Enrolling your teen into a comprehensive driving program will give them to keys to be a safer driver.

Driving at the age of sixteen is perfectly okay with people who does not seem to care because he or she feels as if someone gets into a car they are automatically going to put all attention into driving the vehicle which is not true nowadays because teenage drivers feel the need to be on a cell phone or trying to control the radio and trying to get dressed or put on make up when he or she should only be focused on operating the car. As the CDC stated “High school students aged 16 years and older who, when surveyed, said they had driven a vehicle one or more times during the past 30 days when they had been drinking alcohol.” ("Teen Drinking and Driving"), high school students are actually drinking when they should not be anywhere neat alcohol beverages and be able to drive. Teenagers have the highest average of annual traffic violations than any other age group in the U.S. (Teen Drivers:Get The Facts). This may be one reason why over 100 countries, including most of Europe, have a minimum driving age set at 18. Although the debate over raising the driving age to 18, in the U.S, has been an ongoing argument for many years, researchers have found that raising the driving age would drastically impact the U.S in a positive way. (McBride). Parents say that this would be a benefit because teens would be held responsible for their own actions, since they would be an adult, and parent involvement would no longer be necessary. They also say they want to keep their teen’s safe but not sure if raising the age by 2 years would actually help. Scientist has concluded that even though it is only by 2 years the brain is more developed and teens are more mature.(Crowe). Meaning they would be more focused on the road instead of other distractions. Raising the driving age to 18 would be the best decision for the U.S.
If we were to raise the driving age it would most likely be changed to 18. The best reasons for raising it to 18 would probably be that they are more responsible. “Children are not equipped to handle these vehicles, which are hard for even an experienced, adult driver to handle.” (Ron Shaffer) They have More money because of there jobs and if you go away from home you need a license.
People at 21 years old are more responsible than a 16 year old. According to the CDC, “4,500 Americans between 16 and 19 die from motor vehicle crashes annually” (CDC 4). Teenagers are not capable of handling with great care at the time they are driving, therefore laws and policies should change toward when a person is allowed to drive. Even though some people might say that some teenagers are responsible at the time to drive, they should recognize that if they wait until the age of 21 they would gain more experience and they would not represent a threat for themselves. The driving age should not be raised to 18 years old because teenagers have responsibilities to be go to certain places, if teenagers learn to drive early on in life they will be more comfortable driving and cautious when they get older, and an opposing view point is that teenager’s reflexes are not fully developed or equipped to safely handle an accident. There are many options other than raising the minimum age that are very effective and less damaging; such as, an increase in the use of graduated licensing systems, using driving simulators to teach novice drivers, and allowing states to set their own minimum age for different areas. Increasing driver’s education requirements while adding in new teaching methods is an excellent alternative to raising the driving age. Along with those additions, the learner’s permit and restricted licenses could be given more requirements to make sure that the problem of experience is addressed. Today, many teenagers work hard to obtain their license starting at age 15 by getting their permit. Many parents encourage their children to get their license and gain these privileges, however some encourage their kids to wait and many states agree. Driving age is commonly set at sixteen, but because of safety concerns, the idea of raising the driving age to eighteen is currently posed by state legislation. Increasing the driving age to eighteen is a smart decision because teenagers are seen as irresponsible, they are more likely to get into accidents, and teens can become easily distracted.
More than 5,000 teenagers die while driving each year in the United States (Gregory). In my opinion this is due to three different, yet equally important factors. The first factor is that the teenage mind is yet to be fully developed, causing them to make irresponsible and sometimes reckless decisions. The second factor is that the experience of driving has evolved since the original driving age was established in the early 20th century. The third and final aspect to take into consideration would be that driving is the lowest minimum age of any adult restricted activity in the United States. Although, it can be one of the more harmful, not only to the perspective driver but his or her surroundings as well. Taking all three of these factors into account I believe the minimum driving age should be raised to 18 to decrease the accident rate amongst teenagers.

How old is it to drive? Most would argue the legal driving age of sixteen seems appropriate for someone to begin taking the wheel, while others say that twenty-one is a more sufficient age. Even though raising or maintaining the driving age at sixteen contains both pros and cons, major facts need to come to consideration if the driving age ever increases. As a teenager driving, I believe that people wanting to raise the driving age do not realize the negative effect that that would cause. For instance, if the age increased, teenagers would lose independence and freedom, parents would have to sacrifice their time and freedom, and even though teenagers die in car crashes every year, it would not decrease the overall number of deaths per year.
