Once young people become an adult, they have to know that the age of responsibility begins.
In his essay “ What is the age of responsibility?” Alan Greenblatt, asserts that the age of responsibility comes when young people are capable of handling freedom and choosing the best decisions.
Even though 18 is the age for adulthood, a person should be considered an adult at the age of 21 because at this age people are capable of making the best decisions and the brain is better developed than at the age of 18. People at 21 years old can manage great responsibilities. Young people want to become adults at an early age. Many people want to lower the drinking age to 18. In this situation, this would mean to take the drinking problem further down to 16- and 17- year olds. To demonstrate Alexander Wagenaar says that ¨people who are advocating going down to 18; should acknowledge that they are willing to risk an extra thousands deaths per year and double that number of injuries¨ (Wagenaar ). Of course people will disagree with this idea, but also society needs to consider that the legal age to drink is 21. People at 21 years old are more responsible than a 16 year old. According to the CDC, “4,500 Americans between 16 and 19 die from motor vehicle crashes annually” (CDC 4). Teenagers are not capable of handling with great care at the time they are driving, therefore laws and policies should change toward when a person is allowed to drive. Even though some people might say that some teenagers are responsible at the time to drive, they should recognize that if they wait until the age of 21 they would gain more experience and they would not represent a threat for themselves.
