THE DOCTRINE OF THE TRINITY
AND ITS IMPORTANCE FOR THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

Introduction
The word “Trinity” is not mentioned in the [Christian] Bible. The Latin term, Trinitas [translated to Trinity] was first used by a second century (AD) theologian called Tertullian, Barnes (1971). In fact, theologians often use terms that aren’t found in the Bible to plainly convey biblical truths. A good example of the use of non-biblical terms that perfectly describe God’s nature are the three O’s:
1. Omniscience God is all present
2. Omnipresence God is all knowing
3. Omnipotence God is all powerful
The Nicene Creed provides another example of why theologians used phrases and statements to clearly define who God is.

Wright challenges us to bear the image of God to the world in his book, The Challenge of Jesus: Rediscovering Who Jesus Was and Is.
4. We are to be Born Again and to be Baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
Jesus told Nicodemus [Teacher of Israel],
Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. John 3:5-6 (NIV).
No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. John 3:13 (NIV).
To enter the Kingdom of God we must be born of water and the Spirit. Our inward spiritual birth is symbolized by our baptism in the name of our Triune God.
5. We are to be Image Bearers of the Triune God
N.T. Wright challenges us to bear the image of God to the world in his book, The Challenge of Jesus: Rediscovering Who Jesus Was and Is.
Our task as image-bearing, [italics inserted] God-loving, Christ-shaped, Spirit-filled Christians, following Christ and shaping our world, is to announce redemption to a world that has discovered its fallenness, to announce healing to a world that has discovered its brokenness, to proclaim love and trust to a world that knows only exploitation, fear and

    Chapter four addresses the divisions within the Corinthian church, such as jealousy, quarrelling and their defective view of the church. The apostle Paul links their view of the church to church leadership stating “If they had a true view of the church, they would have a true view of the leaders of the church” (p79). The situation was that their view was lower for the church and higher for the leaders thus they were boasting about the leaders. Paul’s view was that the Corinthian church was spoon feed Christians not maturing as they should. Many churches are elated with their church growth, but it is often superficial. If the church does not offer a real growth opportunity the journey is short lived. The church fills up with Christians not participating in the sanctification process. As with many churches today the Corinthians had a self-serving attitude about themselves and their church. The Corinthians would have never behaved the way they did if they had a higher view of the church and what it stood for and a lesser view of the leaders. Paul outlines three visions of the church “each of which has important implications” (p82).
