1. Ecotourism
Ecotourism adds significant positive contributions in the way people are informed/ educated about the environmental they are vacationing at. This may deal with learning about the wildlife or experiencing the local culture. On top of that individuals are able to appropriate the culture correctly or being able to experience the wildlife in a safely manner. People that take these tours are going into areas that can be considered endangered or unsafe, due to pervious perceptions. However, with these tours these stereotypes/ views of the geographic location and customs of the land. The outcome that they want from this is that the local people would be the ones to hold the tours or they will bring these individuals to local restaurants or even gift shops. On the other hand, there is a negative aspect to ecotourism, because even though people have good intentions they can still add to endangering the area. For instance, the example you gave in class about individuals taking animals from the great barrier reef, even though they did not mean any harm. Their intention might have a bad side effect later on if everyone continues to steal animals and change the infrastructure of the ecosystem of that area. Another disadvantage of the eco-tourism is that the natives of these countries become tourist themselves, because of the disproportional affects that tourism has. My reasoning behind this is because the U.S military has a high involvement in helping the Middle and South America with this “war on drugs”. However, its intentions can be seen as hypocritical because there is still the issue of the high demand for these drugs in the United States, but the United states is not focused on that. Instead their focused in on the fight against the war against drugs in foreign territory and not own their own land. The War on Drugs also as a consequence disintegrate the little democracy these Middle and South American countries have. The fight against the war on drugs is stepping outside of its boundaries under what we considered democracy because human rights are less important. The United States is key player in this war against drugs because they’re the ones helping to train these soldiers and also when it comes to the Mexican – American border they want to build up a strong structure so drugs do not flow through. So they want to keep a key role to protect their own national security, rather than worrying about the democracy of these Latin American countries. In order to further help democracy in these regions countries like the United States need to helping because of their own intentions. This aspect is “The Double-edged Sword of Ecotourism.” In this chapter, Stanford expresses the positives and negatives of ecotourism. Ecotourism is a form of tourism which involves visiting fragile and undisturbed natural areas and in this case, the main reason is to see gorillas. Ecotourism has its good and bad. It is good because those poor communities that live close to the habitats of the apes can have a source of revenue. Those areas are really poor, and with ecotourism, they can earn about $9000 dollars a month. However, those areas may not exactly be the safest. Stanford cites a 1999 cross border attack by rebel groups in Rwanda in which 8 ecotourists were murdered and this attack deterred tourist from going there for many months. Another negative aspect of ecotourism is how it affects the apes. Although, many apes who do live in these areas of habituation and have tourists coming in and out, the apes develop really high stress levels. When humans move too quickly or make loud noises, the apes are stressed out and can flee. Not only that, but increased stress levels lowers their immune systems making them more susceptible to disease. Stanford ends this chapter saying that ecotourism is bound to happen if the countries are too poor to provide for their people and that “the apes will have to live with the results” (190). In

Eco tourism is a fast growing industry involving the tourist visits to natural areas to help minimize the endangered places and animals in that community. According to (ecotourism.org) Ecotourism is defined as "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people." The Eco Certification program is put forth to certify tourist attractions to than help unite the communities, conservations and keep sustainable tourism. Their purpose is also to observe the wildlife and learn about the environment. There are certain basic requirements that gain you an Eco Certification and they are the location, Environmental manager, Customer satisfaction and minimizing any potential environmental damages that can occur these are just four of the ten requirements in order to be Eco certified.
The United States has had a long-standing policy of intervening in the affairs of other nations when the country has thought it within its best interests to do so. Since the 1970’s the United States has tried to impose its will on other nations to combat the most pressing political enemy of the day often linking the war on drugs to the matter to stoke support both domestically and abroad. In the times of the Cold War, this enemy was communism and the government tried to make the connection of the “Red Dope Menace” insinuating drug links with China, Castro’s Cuba, and the Sandinistas in Nicaragua. However, as the world has evolved and communism’s prominence has waned, there is a new enemy whose existence has become intertwined with the drug war. That enemy is terrorism. The connection has gone so far that politicians and journalists have coined a new term to describe the link calling this new problem of our time “Narco-terror.” This paper will examine US efforts to control the drug trade and fight terrorism in Colombia, Peru, Afghanistan and the desired and often undesired consequences that have come about because of those efforts.

The Mexican drug war began in the 1960s, with America’s love for illegal drugs fueling the fire. Narco-violence has claimed the lives of thousands of citizens in recent years. Drug cartels have become comparable to Mafia figures, and have resorted to Mafia-style violence to prove to the Mexican government that they remain in control. Violence caused by drug cartels is rumored to have led Mexico to become a failed state. George W. Grayson, regular lecturer at the United States Department of State, has made more than one-hundred and twenty-five research trips to Mexico, and is considered an expert on U.S.-Mexican relations.
The U.S, entered El Salvador and trained young men in combat. They taught them how to win a war. After they left and left the country in chaos and the men with only one skill. How to fight. As Kris said in the discussion “The U.S. is training soldiers and then leaving the country with hundreds of men with only one skill”. The country was left in distraught after the war with families torn apart, and with no paying income for these men anymore they had to find a new way to earn a living. These men turned too gangs, gangs would allow them to use their strengths and earn money in their country. Yet because of El Salvador’s overpowering neighbors drug exports and imports wouldn’t be the more efficient way to make money. So again they moved to the U.S. where they hoped to dominate gangs and drug distributing. The War on Drugs has been a common phrase in the United States for many decades. What exactly does this mean and how does it shape U.S. foreign policy? The War on Drugs can be defined as the systematic and aggressive policy that is determined to undermine and stop the flow of illegal drugs into the United States. This policy is backed by several U.S. institutions including the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), U.S. Army, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Customs. Also, included in this list are the numerous local law enforcement agencies across the country.

One of the key elements of tourism is the quality of the environment, both natural and man-made. Tourism however, can have a negative effect on the environment due to people not caring for the environment because it is not an area where they normally reside, so they do not consider what long-term effects that their temporary actions may have. Tourism that is not regulated or controlled can lead to negative environmental impacts on air, water, soil, vegetation, and wildlife quality and sustainability.
The United States has a long history of intervention in the affairs of one it’s southern neighbor, Latin America. The war on drugs has been no exception. An investigation of US relations with Latin America in the period from 1820 to 1960, reveals the war on drugs to be a convenient extension of an almost 200 year-old policy. This investigation focuses on the commercial and political objectives of the US in fighting a war on drugs in Latin America. These objectives explain why the failing drug policy persisted despite its overwhelming failure to decrease drug production or trafficking. These objectives also explain why the US has recently exchanged a war on drugs for the war on terrorism.
Ultimately the question that we should ask,have we as a nation approach the war on drugs fairly ? Is the war on drugs about the drug or is it about our people? I can honestly say with my head held high its not about the drug but about the people. .We as a nation don't gain anything if we strip our people from their rights and abandoned them. As Lisa D. Moore, DrPH and Amy Elkavich, BA noted, “Everyone should be able to access quality health care and education inside and out of prison. We should support ex-felons after their prison terms in their attempts to find meaningful employment, housing, and education.” We all live under one nation and should strive to be the best nations and allowing people to seize our rights as citizen is irrational. We need to step up and ask for change!
New Zealand tourism is largely reliant on 'Eco-tourism' so to maintain the tourism industry it is imperative that our environment is conserved.
