When you think of popular music in the United States of America, what artists come to mind? Many would say Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber or perhaps Ed Sheeran. However, popular music is more than just the “pop idols” of the 21st century. From folk protest to country to jazz and rock n’ roll, these genres have shaped the United States of America and American taste in music. On the rise in the United States is electronic dance music. While it has been around in some form for many decades, and has been wildly popular in Europe, electronic dance music or “EDM” has only recently increased in popularity in the United States. Electronic dance music has emerged as a collection of genres that fall in this category, mainly started by it’s explosion and convergence with “pop” music that dominates radios today. Electronic dance music however, is so much more than that. Critiques of electronic dance music fail to recognize the broad spectrum of the types of EDM that exist and the culture that brings hundreds of thousands of people together. While it may not be traditional in the way that many musicians would consider music to fall under the sacred term, it has created a movement bigger than anyone could have imagined even twenty years ago.
Electronic dance music is a broad term covering many different genres and subgenres of percussive electronic music. It has redefined what music means by utilizing electronic components such as synthesizers, computer software, sampling and music not created by voice or instruments. Techniques used in electronic dance music can be traced back all the way to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. With newer sharing platforms like soundcloud, youtube, and spotify music sharing is easier and more widespread than ever. These platforms give emerging disc jockeys a shot at becoming popular in the ever growing type of music. The different platforms give artists an opportunity to reach many and many types of audiences. They can post their albums on iTunes or Spotify and then their more dedicated listeners can find special editions or remixes of their songs on Soundcloud, while others can watch full recordings of their shows on Youtube.
