The Debate on Outlawing Gambling
Millions of people like to gamble, whether it is casino-style games,
lotteries or betting on the global net. For some gambling is an
addiction, a sickness just like alcoholism or cancer, that can destroy
lives but for others it is just a way to have some fun; that’s why
there are some positive and some negative aspects about gambling. Is
the negative point of view strong enough for us to want to outlaw
gambling because of its addictive nature?
Gambling can only be seen as entertainment if the person gambling has
limits on to how much he or she bets and know when to stop. A gambler
starts betting with small amounts of money and slowly larger and
larger bets will follow. There are three stages in gambling addiction,
according to the Arizona Council on Compulsive Gambling, Inc: winning
phase, losing phase and depression phase. The gambler thinks he
creates a better self-image by betting, and losses are seen as bad
luck. Think of what problems may be caused by the non-stop obsession
to win more money after losing some. People’s lives change completely
because of that. The gambler keeps betting until he loses all his
savings and this is where the depression phase comes. The person is
now controlled by the slot machines which seem to be more important
than his family, his job and his other responsibilities. First of all
the family’s savings will be reduced since most of the income will be
spent on gambling and if it’s not enough this is where theft and
criminality comes. The addictive person will begin to steal money from
others or borrow money from friends, frequently absent from work and
this concludes to his total change of his character and personality.
The gambler is now obsessed with winning to cover excessive debt but
he can’t stop if there’s no control, no limits and no support. A
family or ones life can be destroyed by a single high bet that makes
the person lose control which then leads to high debts and when debts

For years casino gambling was portrayed in the media and Hollywood as being associated with criminal activities and the mafia. Now with proper scrutiny and government regulations casino gambling has become a lucrative business, with casinos stock even trading on Wall Street. Casino gambling is an ever increasingly popular and legal activity in many states throughout the United States. “The term gambling or ‘gaming’ as the industry calls it, means any legalized form of wagering or betting conducted in a casino, on a riverboat, on an Indian reservation, or at any other location under the jurisdiction of the United States” (National Gambling Impact Study Commission Act). States that allow casino gambling benefit vastly by re-incorporating the taxation off of commerce gained from casinos and tourism associated with the casinos back into the state and local communities. Jobs created by casinos also have a positive impact on the economy in local communities surrounding casinos as well as, the states that legalize gambling. Texas, while allowing horse and dog racing, lottery, and charitable bingo, does not currently prohibit casino gambling. In this essay, I will provide the different reasons the State of Texas will benefit from legalizing casinos gambling. By not having casinos, Texas continues to lose valuable tax revenue that could be awarded to state and local government funded programs for example, education, public safety, economic development, and infrastructure improvements. With the increasing number of legal casinos in bordering states such as Louisiana, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, the loss of tourism and tax revenue is a growing concern for Texas. Passing legislation to allow casinos in the State of Texas will help fund ...

Over the past couple decades, sports gambling has become a growing industry and a hotly debated topic. Sports gambling is the act of placing a monetary wager on a sporting event for a specific outcome to happen. Daniel P. Connaughton claims sports gambling has always been an attractive medium for betting because the outcome of the games is unknown and so many factors go into a sports game (436). But currently as it stands in the United States, people may only bet on sports in Nevada. Yet the industry continues to expand and according to Jeffrey Roske, “Americans wager over $500 billion per year on sports. Of this staggering total, only $2-$3 billion per year are gambled legally within the state of Nevada…” (463). Roske’s evidence brings up
Gambling has been around for more than a century, it was first developed by the Mesopotamians, then slowly gambling becomes a pop entertainment that is acknowledged and played by many different cultures as an income solution or ways to spend time with family and friends. Gambling has become a recognized social activity spanning to almost all the cultures and historical eras in recorded history (Darbyshire, P., Oster, C., & Carrig, H, 2001). Gambling was thought to be only a harmless game that everyone could enjoy, but in reality, gaming causes a lethal effect on the players, especially the younger generation that is most vulnerable to the effects of gambling. Kids are at the age where they watch and learn everything their parent does. Hence,
Gambling... Who does not like to gamble? People play lotteries, bet on sport games or try their luck on slot machines with a thought to win some amount of money. In fact, this excitement for gambling can be seen even from early ages; for example, ancient Egyptians used to play dice in 2000 BC or the first casinos opened their doors to customers during the Greeco-Roman period ( Whittaker and Cushman 1 ). Nowadays casino industry is a large business in the United States that brings high revenues and offers various entertainment that attracts people from different areas. So just recently residents and visitors of Worcester, Wicomico and surrounding counties got a great opportunity to try themselves in a new Ocean Downs casino that came into operation couple months ago. Ocean Downs casino is an excellent benefit to the community that helps to improve the economic and social status of the county and also serves as a great entertainment for the adult population.
Today in America, Gambling can be a matter of life and death; not just to adults, but to their kids as well. Gambling has been growing since day one and it is still going strong today; and not just through casinos but on the internet as well. People usually turn to gambling because they think it is their one way ticket to being rich or earning some extra cash for themselves, but in reality it could be their one way ticket to the bottom. It may be true that gambling helps the economy, but is helping the economy worth someone’s life. With gambling today, people should know that it is not the answer to any of their problems; it was never the answer to their problems back when it first started in America in the 1600’s, though it may be the answer for the economy now with all of its problems or natural disasters, but it certainly is not the answer to go online and gamble.

Gambling has been an activity that has been around many states for a while. People like to gamble to test their luck and hopefully get lucky enough to win a prize. Nowadays you don 't have to go to the casino to test your luck, at majority of grocery stores they offer the ability to buy scratch off ticket and or play the powerball. Many people gamble to have fun, as well as, have a good time, but there are others that gambling becomes an addiction that is hard to control. The odds of winning are less favorable than the odds of losing. According to Jost, “lotteries in 43 states” as well as, DC “collectively” made “18 billion in revenue for the state,” along with the “local government.” (Jost,525) The lottery is a great investment for many states and the local government. Something that everyone has to be aware of is that the the lottery will always make a profit. Someone might get lucky enough to win 100 dollars, while 2 other people loss 100 dollars each. The big picture is that nobody is going to invest in a company that is not going to
The adrenaline-rushing feeling of gambling offers people the idea that opportunity lies within their hands. Unfortunately, there are far too many consequences to gambling to even begin to count. To win you must play, and to win big you must play big. As more gamblers can recall their losses rather than their winnings, gamblers are often dealt with poor hands and must play the risky game to stay alive. Even though gambling has so many faults, some still fall under its corruptions because of gambling’s deceiving fallacies.
