People in panic screaming their terrified lungs out as they saw the mighty Lusitania sink in the breezy freezing night of the May 7th, 1915.The author helps the reader empathize by talking about what the boat ride is like what happens to people on board. One example of the author empathizing for the reader is, “Glass shattered. Fire broke out beneath deck. Passengers shrieked.” Another example is “ There was little doubt about what had happened: The Lusitania had been attacked.” The Final example the shows how the author helps the reader empathize is, “It took only 18 minutes for the Lusitania to sink.
“The Wreck of the Sea-Venture,” written by Peter Linebaugh and Marcus Rediker in their book Many Headed Hydra, tells the story of the shipwreck of the Sea-Venture en route to Virginia in 1669, which left the passengers of the ship stranded on Bermuda without a ship to continue the journey to Virginia. While the members of the Virginia Company made a boat to continue the journey, the remaining passengers of the Sea-Venture had to cooperate with one another in order to survive. The authors’ thesis in this document is the shipwreck of the Sea-Venture and the actions taken by the sailors portray the themes of early Atlantic settlement. One example of the emotions shared with the reader was Corrie’s internal conflict of hating the Nazis and later trying to forgive them. After the war had ended, Corrie gave a sermon in Munich, speaking about how God asks people to forgive one another. When she was done speaking, a previous SS Guard in Ravensbruck, whom she did in fact recognize, came up to shake her hand. The book states, “The man thrust out his hand to shake Corrie’s, and as he did so, hatred filled her heart. She would not and could not lift her hand to shake his…Her arm stretched out as though she had no control over it , and she shook the man’s hand. As she did so, all the hatred she felt melted away, and she knew she had forgiven him (Benge & Benge, 1998, p. 192).” This depicts the emotional conflict that Corrie was undergoing to the reader, showing a powerful story of strength and forgiveness. Another way the story’s vitality was shown was by the authors’ portrayals of the characters in such a way that the reader gets to discover many aspects of them. Descriptions of the characters appearances and actions showed many facets of their personalities. The first example used is a personal example that provides pathos . Hicks states that she went to a friend’s son’s birthday party and the son, Seth, got humiliated. Seth’s father told him to “toughen up” while his mother tried to comfort him. The altercation was uncomfortable for Hicks and her husband. This specific example contains both imagery and pathos. The author uses specific words and phrases to set the stage for the reader. When describing the setting of the party, she writes “The dinner table was set underneath a huge maple tree strung with little white lights.” In this sentence, the author uses the words huge, little, and white to aid the reader in forming a mental image of the host’s backyard. Hicks wishes for the reader to be inserted into the setting so they will be more entertained and interested. As the story progresses, she adds pathos in an attempt to get the reader invested. Hicks includes charged phrases such as “Margot stormed out of the room” and “Seth left the room with his chin on his chest…”. By doing this, the author draws the audience in and keeps them captivated. Pathos, in this case, also successfully provides a feeling of sympathy for the young boy. Providing a feeling of sympathy allows the author to depict the negative effects of damage to one 's dignity. In the Princess Bride the author William Goldman decides to kill off Wesley the main character of the romance comedy. But when he does he has a strange drawback and has the sudden realization of what he had just done. He mourns, grieves, and finds himself in his very own “Pit of Despair.” Yet how can this be, he had never experienced such a tragedy himself, but in his writing of a fictional fantasy character he is overwhelmed with these genuine emotions. Sentiments and actions are easier to access and put into writing if one has already experienced the event.
The Titanic makes most people very curious and is a very compelling topic. Deborah Hopkinson, the author of Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt, Apples to Oregon, and others wrote a marvelous book about the Titanic. The book is about the horrific disaster of the marvelous ship called Titanic Voices From The Disaster. This book provides a story about the Titanic and includes story’s from passengers, that were aboard the Titanic the night it hit an ice berg and sunk. My topic is concerning the sinking of the Lusitania. The Lusitania was a British merchant ship that had 200 Americans on board. The Germans sunk the cruiser with submarine warfare on May 7th, 1915, claiming that the ship was carrying munitions. Though the Lusitania was not a weapons-bearing ship, later investigations proved there were a few munitions on board. When the ship sank, a total of 150 of the 1,100 casualties were Americans; thus, this crisis later became war propaganda in America. President Woodrow Wilson became frustrated with the transgression on the Germans’ part and issued them a warning. The titanic was a gigantic ship. It was the biggest, newest, and advanced ship during its time. The titanic was built in Belfast with the newest and best technology. Then after its completion it would travel to New York. During the tragedy of the Titanic the engineers had a key role on saving people. Although the tragedy of the titanic was sad it taught us many lessons on preventing such a thing again. Although the titanic has sunk to the bottom of the ocean it will never be forgotten.

We have all heard about the Titanic. Either we have watched the romance movie or done our research in a different way. No matter where we get our information from we know the biggest parts of the tragedy. The ship Titanic crashed into an iceberg on a cold April night on the Atlantic Ocean while sailing its first trip. But haven’t you ever wanted to know more details about? Maybe how the people who were on it and survived? How could the situation be prevented? Couldn’t they have saved more people? Well in the book “A Night to Remember” it has details on the Titanic you have probably never thought of knowing. While reading the first chapter some parts really caught my attention. One was when people felt the jolt from the collision with the ice berg people didn’t suspect what tragedy was to come. A girl named Marguerite Frolicher, who was accompanying her father on a business trip, woke up with a jump since she was half asleep she was thinking about ‘little white lake ferries’ landing sloppily which made her laugh and thought to herself “Isn’t it funny…we’re landing!”. “It took two hours and forty minutes for the titanic to sink, just long enough for 2,208 tragic performances to unfold, with the ships lights blazing” (Sides 2). April 1912 the white star line’s pride, the titanic, left for its voyage that would change history forever. While traveling through the Atlantic Ocean they collided with an ice berg causing fractures throughout the boat. The ice water filled the compartments causing the front of the boat to weigh down the back, separating the boat in two. Research shows that the cause of the Titanic’s sinking was due to a dramatic increase in the probability of running into an iceberg and its high speed while traveling through the North Atlantic Shipping Lanes in 1912. As a consequence of the sinking, the U.S. Coast Guard now runs the international ice patrol and monitors the ice bergs by radar and satellite. Also it is now required to carry binoculars and radio connector all times on a ship.
This is the story of the unsinkable ship that sunk. To finish with I leave you with these famous words “but I’m too involved now. You jump, I jump. Remember?” and “I’ll never let go….I promise.”
Most of you have probably heard about the Titanic, but how many of you have heard of the Olympic? Did you know that the Titanic and Olympic were really the embodiment of one man’s vision to make his company the top shipping company on the North Atlantic run between Europe and the New World? That man was Mr. Bruce Ismay and he had a bold dream to build the grandest ocean liners the world had ever seen. And today I will share how I learned under FLDS that Ismay’s vision and dream was extrinsically motivated by profit. Also I will discuss how his vision was willed into reality by incorporating elements of Change Management. However, Ismay ultimately doomed the future of his company by becoming the single point of failure for his company by not applying Change Management to its end state.
Fear has taken a hold of every man aboard this ship, as it should; our luck is as far gone as the winds that led us off course. Chaotic weather has turned the crew from noble seamen searching for glory and riches, to whimpering children. To stay sane I keep the holy trinity close to my heart and the lady on my mind. Desperation comes and goes from the men’s eyes, while the black, blistering clouds fasten above us, as endless as the ocean itself. The sea rocks our wood hull back and forth but has yet to flip her. The rocking forces our bodies to cling to any sturdy or available hinge, nook or rope, anything a man can grasp with a sea soaked hand. The impacts make every step a danger. We all have taken on a ghoulish complexion; the absence of sunlight led the weak souls aboard to fight sleep until sick. Some of us pray for the sun to rise but thunder constantly deafens our cries as it crackles above the mast. We have been out to sea for fifty-five days and we have been in this forsaken storm for the last seventeen.
