A new husband and a beautiful bride share their first dance together on their wedding day. Moments before the dance the new husband was in the coat room, having sex with the maid of honor. Meanwhile, the beautiful bride was in the kitchen with her high school sweetheart, on her back trying not to make any noise while she had sex with her high school sweetheart. The sanctity of the new marriage is broken. However, both will go on in the marriage for the next few months until it collapses. The new couple had no idea of what a traditional marriage is meant to be. Marriage has been many things throughout history but, some constants have maintained throughout time until current society. Marriage has maintained an identity of love, commitment, and trust to one other person. Today marriage is slowly losing that identity. The acceptance of infidelity has perpetuated the disappearance of the identity of marriage and, is destroying monogamy as a practice in the United States. As a guideline, infidelity will be defined as, the romantic or physical relationship between two people where one person is already in a committed relationship. The causes that are perpetuating infidelities efforts to undermine the identity of marriage are technology, media, or entertainment.
Today we can communicate across the world in seconds thanks to the wonders of technology. However, the cost of this convenience has opened the door for infidelity to gain acceptance and become easier to commit than ever before. Within seconds, using any online search engine, thousands of websites designed to facilitate affairs and, educate a cheater on how to have the affair without getting caught can be accessed. The rise in unfaithful spouses is causing the traditional marriage to fall apart and last no more than a couple years. The transformation to the acceptance of infidelity must be stopped if the traditional marriage is to be saved.

Bill Cosby once said that, “For two people in a marriage to live together day after day is unquestionably the one miracle the Vatican has overlooked.” J.J. Lewis (1995-2009) This famous comedian could not have been more correct when recognizing that every marriage will face a multiple number of challenges and is often difficult. Couples, once married, must find a way to end any struggles in order for the marriage to be successful. Marital traditions have changed greatly over the centuries and due to this, the opinion of what an ‘ideal marriage” consists of has changed as well. When reviewing the document “On Love and Marriage” the author (a Merchant of Paris) believes that marriage should not be an equal partnership, but one that pleases the husband to avoid conflict. This can be clearly seen through an examination of: the social, and political environment of the late fourteenth century, and the merchant’s opinions on the area of obedience to a husband, and how to avoid infidelity.

There are many activities that take place online today. These stem from watching explicitly sexual materials, to talking about sex – from having sex chat with others to becoming sexually aroused. Most affairs start off somewhat innocently, but soon grow in nature. This is quite different from in the past when things rushed forward because affairs typically started in the workplace. Clearly, much has changed, including the meaning of infidelity itself.
Monogamy is a cultural norm that dominates many modern societies, and when individuals engage in monogamous relationships, they are unconsciously conforming to historical and cultural legacies of what is perceived as love that predate their illusions of personal agency. Although anthropological records indicate that 85% of human societies have tended towards polygamy (Henrich, Boyd and Richerson 2012), the modern culture of monogamy has rapidly risen and spread in the past millennium (Senthilingam 2016). This demonstrates how an individual’s conception of a heterosexual relationship as normatively monogamous has been constructed by social forces. In addition, social forces in the form of state legislation also perpetuate and reinforce an individual’s conception of what a romantic relationship should entail. Monogamous heterosexual marriage remains to be the only form of marriage with legal recognition in many countries. An individual’s belief that a romantic relationship should culminate in marriage is hence not formed through independent thought, but rather through what is considered normative by law. One aspect of American culture that has changed profoundly is the institution of marriage. After the husband leaves work one afternoon, he decides to stop in at the local bar. The man sits at a table in the corner of the room. Not long after his arrival, a woman approaches him. She asks the man if she can join him at his table. The two seem to have quite a bit in common and enjoy each other’s company. The woman asks if he would like to go back to her apartment. He has not had a fight with his wife today. In fact, she surprised him with a love note in his briefcase. Their sex life is enjoyable, frequent, and without complaint. The couple is not currently having financial problems. Despite this, why did the man decide to leave with a stranger and cheat on his wife? A great deal of research has been carried out on the topic of infidelity. Marital therapists have reported that more than half of the couples they counsel are in therapy as a result of infidelity (Atkins, Jacobson citation). Therapists also consider an extramarital affair as, “one of the most damaging relationship events and one of the most difficult problems to treat in couples therapy” (whisman predicting sexual infidelity…). Some therapists estimate that 50% to 65% of couples seek help after an incident of infidelity in their relationship (Atkins, Jacobson & Baucom). Identifying the reasons for this problem are essential to the success of its reduction. Infidelity is not a new phenomenon. Infidelity is depicted as an extremely negative thing in the United States, and is often blamed for trust issues, psychologically damaging the spouse and their children, tearing apart marriages and families and more. People who commit adultery are often shamed and told how wrong what they did is and what a terrible person they are for doing it. According to the Journal of Martial and Family by the Associated Press, however, 41% of “marriages where one or both spouses admit to infidelity, either physical or emotional.” Clearly, while infidelity is generally viewed negative by society, many people either decide that it is not as negative as it is portrayed, or do not care and do it anyway. “The Lady with the Pet Dog” and “The Storm” both go against the typical view of adultery being a negative thing in a relationship by showing that it can actually have a beneficial outcome and leave some, if not all people happier.
In examining and analyzing different theories and reasoning, Is adultery immoral? By Richard Wasserstrom. No, adultery isn’t always immoral by the virtue of having cases where adultery is acceptable and moral. As defined by Wasserstrom, adultery is any case of sexual activity outside of marriage. I agree with Wasserstrom’s approach that you can’t disregard the cases where extramarital sex is moral.
In this paper I am writing about marriage and infidelity in modern life and the books we have read in class. Marriage is a mutual bond in which a man and a woman decide to be with each other until they die. Infidelity is basically when the man or woman in a relationship cheat on the other person, without them knowing.
Since the beginning of time, marriage exists as a large part of life. The values of marriage change on a year to year basis and as trends continue to change so will marriage. There have been numerous reasons for marriage throughout time such as arranged, wealth, love or many others. In the 18th century, many marriages were based on one’s class and wealth and not true love. Today, many marriages do not take wealth or class into account they focus on that person’s inner self and love. Marriage exists as an overlying theme throughout Pride and Prejudice and every marriage appears for a different reason.
In the United States, marriage is a commitment two people make for the rest of their lives. The average American marriage lasts seven years. Well over half of all marriages end in divorce (Francouer, 72). Statistics in the infidelity have rose fifty percent since the 1970s and is rising all the time. The divorce count in this country is now up to one out of every three-marriage end in divorce. Serial polygamy is a common lifestyle for those who are divorced and then become remarried. The relationship between a husband and wife should be sacred and trustworthy. Without the trust and honesty there is no marriage. Monogamy is the loving, sharing, and devoting one's self to another person for the rest of their life. Monogamy should be the most important aspect in a marriage.
There was a time when more smart-conscious decisions were made relating to sexual relationships. In particular, sexual relationships within a marriage. However, times have changed. The pillars that hold up our individual sexual values have started to crumble. It is estimated that two out of three marriages fail due to infidelity. During the 19th century (early 1920s), the divorce rates increased by every 1000 marriages, 6.6 of them ended in divorce. Until the end of WWII, divorce rates double every five years mainly due to the expectation of what a marriage is and the separation between a soldier and his wife. Separation between a newly married couple can cause distrust due to the distance. Most newly married wives expected the life of happiness and excitement, however, they did not expect to lose their husband to the war nor did they expect the abusive behavior, also known as PTSD, from soldiers coming home from the war, whether it ended or the soldier was honorably discharged due to an injury.
