The Contact Lens
When the contact lens was invented, the world of vision correction was altered forever. No longer were those people lacking perfect 20/20 vision forced to look any different than everyone else. Both discrete and revolutionary, the contact lens provided a brand new, viable, alternate solution to an age-old problem. After centuries of engineering and discovery the contact lens has evolved greatly. Presently contact lenses are made hard or soft, for daily or continuous wear, gas permeable, and even providing ultraviolet protection. A properly fitted pair of today’s discrete, convenient, versatile, and inexpensive contact lenses provide the best form of vision correction available in today’s market.
The creation of the first wearable pair of eyeglasses is credited to Salvino D'Armate in Italy around the year 1284 (Bellis). Despite numerous improvements made to this original model, the eyeglasses remained an elementary piece of technology that provided the sole form of vision correction at that time. This was the case century after century. Leonardo da Vinci left us with the first sketches and descriptions of contact lenses in 1508 (CLC). The credit for developing the first corneal contact lens is given to Dr. Thomas Young in 1801. He created a one quarter inch long glass tube filled with water which had a microscope lens fitted on the end (Hartstein). It wasn’t until the late 19th century, however, that the first crude, but tolerable pair of contact lenses were introduced (CLC). Since this first medieval pair, the contact lens has been improved upon time after time. From the introduction of using plastics in contact lens production to the soft, gas permeable, daily wear, disposable lens...

Vistakon should target 1-Day Acuvue to the part-time user segment (use lenses <5 days per week); these customers do not use contacts daily so would be less cost-sensitive. Furthermore, these individuals may not wear contacts daily due to discomfort or other ocular symptoms so may be willing to pay more for a high-quality lens. Also, these consumers are not specifically catered to at this time so Vistakon could gain new consumers in addition to minimizing cannibalization from other Vistakon products. 1-Day Acuvue may also appeal to contact lens dropouts (18% of eyeglass wearers), as it provides a more comfortable option that is low commitment.
4. In the early 1670’s Anton van Leeuwenhook, a Dutch fabric-store owner, began to grind lenses as a hobby. He used handheld microscopes to examine materials such as pond water and blood.
Countless people with glasses or contacts may think, “Will I ever not need to wear these things to help me see?” And the answer is YES, because of a newer form of surgery called LASIK eye surgery. This surgery revives peoples sad glasses eyes and give you new happy eyes, that can help you see without a hunk of metal or a piece of plastic. LASIK eye surgery is another option to retain people's vision. In my speech I will talk about what LASIK eye surgery is, some of the risks with this surgery, and the aftermath of the surgery.
Spectacles gave a person good vision if a person had a regular cornea and normal astigmatism. However, if a person had “corneal astigmatism or diseases and abnormalities of the cornea” the productivity of the spectacles were minimal (Siviglia, 2010). Little did people know that contact lenses would be developed and help individuals who did not have regular corneas and normal astigmatism.

Currently, 168.5 million US citizens use glasses or contact lenses, which means 75% of the adult US population has seen an optometrist (topoptometricschool.com). That’s a vast amount of people who have encountered in some aspect with the business of optometry. Before plunging into the vast history is optometry, it is first important to understand exactly where it originated from. The word, optometry, comes from the Greek language. Opto which means sight and metron which means measure are the two Greek words where it originates from. (topoptometricschool.com) Many ancient Greek philosophers like Ptolemy, Euclid, and Aristophanes wrote about the use of a sort of extremely simplified version of vision enhancement, but it was not at all very practical in use (Goss, David A).
Intraocular lens implants (IOLs) are used in both refractive lens change and cataract surgery to substitute the natural lens of the eyes and correct for refractive errors. Over current years, many improvements in intraocular lenses have approved for the development of a wide-spectrum of lenses beyond the conventional monofocal lens implants. These improvements include presbyopia-correcting IOLs which provide a treatment option for presbyopic patients who do not succeed for laser refractive surgery and do not want to rely on reading glasses. Presbyopia-correcting lens can be differed into two broad types: multifocal IOLs and accommodative IOLs. Near, immediate and far distances. That's what the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) recent
To correct both these common vision problems, glasses and contacts redirect the rays so that they may land on the retina.

Prescription eyeglasses practically always cost much more than reading glasses, thanks to the detailed manufacturing process that creates them for the individual’s specific needs and makes them durable enough for daily use.
The invention of the magnifying glasses inspired artisans to develop a pair that patients would be able to put on in front of their eyes. The first spectacles that were invented are believed to be invented between 1268 and 1289 in Italy. The small discs glass came from the idea of two glass balls, then punching out circles with cold copper pipes. Each of the pieces of glass was ground on the back surface, and then they were framed and given a handle. Glasses were formed when they had started to put a divider in between each of the glasses.
This simple, none invasive procedure is able to provide individuals with a cheaper opportunity than surgery or for those who do not wish to have surgery (Barrett, 2009). The more vision therapy is used, the more well-known this therapy will become and perhaps one day children and adults alike may not be misdiagnosed with a disease they do not possess (Boden and Brodeur, 1999). Although there are two major types of vision therapy, each session will differ between optometrists and ophthalmologists, but nevertheless the benefits will remain the same. These lasting benefits will have a tremendous impact in the daily lives of anyone who completes the therapy (Vision Therapy FAQ). Finally, if it was not for vision therapy’s use of physical as well as mental exercises, human’s poor vision would interfere with daily tasks and society could not function as efficiently as it does now (Krebs, W. and Krebs, P.,
