Few people ponder over what is to come, but individuals all over the world face consequences of their actions, whether it is from grudges, hatred, or love. However, many people also face the consequences of greed. Greed is a selfish action in which one has the desire for certain things, usually wealth. It is very powerful and has even taken over people’s lives, making them face serious consequences such as jail time, debt, loss of friends, and much more. One such person who displayed unquenchable greed is businessman, Larry Ellison; Ellison’s desire for money hurt a great amount of people, including himself. Humans are born with greed and believe that they will grow out of it, but some develop more avarice as they grow older. Ellison was born as Lawrence Joseph Ellison on August 17, 1944, in the Bronx and was the son of Florence Spellman, a single mother (Weinberger). At a young age, Ellison encountered a tragedy, and it was an almost life threatening incident. Not even a year old, Ellison got pneumonia at nine months, which made his mother send him to Chicago, in order for him to live with his aunt and uncle Ellison bought a whole island in Hawaii, participated in yacht racing, and would trash-talk competitors in any activity he was involved in according to an article (Weinberger). One could predict that he was very greedy of having luxurious possessions. According to Mooallem, “He[Ellison] own[ed] a tremendous amount of stuff – cars, boats, real estates, Japanese antiquities, the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament, and America’s Cup sailing team, one of Bono’s guitars – and has a reputation for intensity and excess” (Mooallem). Ellison wanted money no matter how he got it. His net worth was approximately thirty-nine billion dollars in 2013 and was known as the ninth richest person in the world (Pizzigati).
