The Cold War occurred throughout 1949 to 1990. The Cold War included many threats and tension between nations, because if one country launched a nuclear bomb, it would have been considered suicide because they would immediately get backfired with an opposing nuclear bomb. The two countries mainly involved were the United States, who were trying to influence other countries towards democracies like the USA itself, and the Soviet Union, who were openly communists and thought communism was the best option for other countries. The United States and the Soviet Union both made many advances in nuclear technology, even though neither launched a nuclear bomb on the other. “The Chollima Movement, however, applied the same method of centralized state planning that began with the Soviet First Five-Year Plan in 1928,” (Communism in Korea - Nations Wiki). In 1928 the Soviets made a plan called the Five Year Plan, which involved industrializing the USSR and allowed Stalin to control collective farms and industrial goods. The North Koreans made a plan along with the Soviets that was similar to Stalin’s Five Year Plan, meaning the Soviets influenced North Korea economically. “North Korea owes its survival as a separate political entity to China and the Soviet Union,” (North Korea - China and the Soviet Union). When Korea was in the midst of splitting into two, the USSR provided major political support to North Korea. They transferred the idea of communism over to them, unlike South Korea who was more influenced by the United States and democratic societies. The Soviet Union gave cultural support to North Korea because as they were assisting the country they brought over their own beliefs. “Fidel Castro began working for the Soviet Union in 1943,” (When Castro Became a Communist). Fidel Castro was an important political leader during this time. He later became the Prime Minister of Cuba and was working with the Soviets. Politically, he had the same opinions on communism, as they influenced him to become a communist and make his country communist during 1943 before the Cold War had started. “After seizing power in the Caribbean island of Cuba in 1959, leftist revolutionary leader Fidel Castro aligned himself with the Soviet Union,” (Cuban Missile Crisis - Cold War). Culturally, the Soviet Union was against the United States. When the Soviet Union went into Cuba and put missiles there towards the USA, they had brought Cuba into that belief against the United States as well, because of the harm that could occur if they launched those missiles. Economically, if the Soviet’s had the missiles in place in Cuba, they would protect the country, saving them massive amounts of money to rebuild if an attacker came in and destroyed the
