Soon after WWII, the world was split into two opposing sides that, though they did not actually fight, were in the Cold War. The war lasted until the USSR broke apart in 1991. The Cold War was created by the ideological differences of the East and West Blocs. The ideological systems of the two powers were viewed as being complete opposites. By far the biggest cause of the Cold War was the fact that both sides believed the other was wrong. The Cold War was basically a battle between communism and capitalism. In 1946 Winston Churchill gave a speech stating that the Soviet Union as a government that was trying to “enforce totalitarian systems upon the free democratic world”. He also said that the Soviet Union “enforced control upon the common people by force” while the U.S. and Great Britain believed in “the great principles of freedom and the rights of man.
