Draft 2 One of the largest concerns for the modern world is the current energy consumption rate. With present day fossil fuel reserves rapidly shrinking, the importance of deciding on alternative energies grows significantly. While there are considerable options, such as solar, hydro, geothermal, nuclear fusion, and fission; it is important to remember the inherent dangers that these untested sources can create. The Chernobyl Disaster serves as a grim reminder of the consequences that can result from new technological breakthroughs. This essay will explore the social, health, environmental, causes and effects of the Chernobyl Disaster, the impact it carried, and the safety regulations and political standpoints that changed as a result. The Chernobyl Disaster occurred during a systems test at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant on Saturday, 26th April 1986. The power plant, which is located near the city of Pripyat, Ukraine experienced a sudden and unexpected power surge during one of the systems check, this initiated an emergency shutdown. However, during this process, a second and exponentially larger spike in the power output occurred. This led to a reactor vessel rupturing, and a series of steam explosions. These steam explosions subsequently exposed the graphite moderator of the reactor to air, causing it to ignite. This force sent a plume of highly radioactive fallout into the atmosphere, and over an extensive geographical area, including Pripyat. One clear example of how the effects of the Chernobyl disaster were made worse is evident in the firefighter’s immediate, yet ineffective response. The first responder firefighters, under command of Lieutenant Volodymyr Pravik were hopelessly unprepared for what faced them at Cher... ... middle of paper ... ...e that would be best suited for the future. The Chernobyl disaster led to a dramatic change in the ensuing environment, health, safety regulations, and politics. The incident revealed how human errors could in fact increase the damages of an unpredicted event. Sadly, the true testament and warning regarding nuclear disasters that Chernobyl provided has been weakened by its depiction in pop culture. This is presented in the devastation caused by an alien artifact in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Therefore, it remains critically important to separate the facts from fiction when exploring the causes and impacts of the Chernobyl Disaster, and to ensure that one chooses the next source of energy in a wise and intelligent manner.
