The Characteristics Of Odysseus In Homer's The Odyssey

In the epic poem, The Odyssey, by Homer, Odysseus exhibits countless character traits, throughout his quest, that may correlate to similar manners that I portray. Throughout the entirety of Homer’s epic, Odysseus depicts numerous traits that are relatable to everyday human-beings, however, only a few of these are applicable to me. During most of the epic, Odysseus yearns to achieve his goal of returning to his home in Ithaca and to his beloved Penelope, much like myself amidst my own life in my pursuit to achieve my goals among sports and school. Unfortunately for our hero, Odysseus, he runs into an assortment of obstacles that hinder him from obtaining his dream of, once again, seeing Penelope. Odysseus has one essential goal that he tries to fulfill during his escapade: to return home to his dearly beloved Penelope. After being trapped on Calypso’s island for nearly seven years, Odysseus is resolute in his crusade to return to his homestead. ‘... each day I hope and hunger for my house. I long to see the day of my returning home’ (Homer 102). Much like Odysseus’s objective to return home, I set goals for myself on a daily basis. Many of these goals are short-lived, however, when it comes to substantial segments in my life, I push myself to make long-term goals to overcome during my endeavors such as throughout school and sports. Examples of these would be my continuous desire to qualify for states in cross country, or to further my education to a prodigious college. However one looks at it, I aspire to stipulate personal goals for myself to achieve throughout my lifetime. Odysseus and I are similar in this fashion, both trying to keep ourselves going by pressuring ourselves to achieve what we truly desire. Unfortunately, goals that are easily achieved are typically not worth achieving, along with any admirable goal we may set, both, Odysseus and I, manage to find ourselves running into herculean obstacles for ourselves to …show more content…

At various points throughout Odysseus’s journey, he recognizes the fact that he must utilize his vast knowledge in order to make it past the perplexing challenges that come his way. ‘Along one side lay Scylla; on the other side, divine Charybdis now was swallowing the brine’ (Homer 244). Miraculously, Odysseus manages to get past these two tremendous beasts and advance on his journey, the same style he uses to overcome a multitude of diverse obstacles. Similarly, in my own life, I must constantly battle with myself to overcome obstacles, both large and small. For example, whenever I attempt to conjure plans with my friends, typically, I have other priorities that I must attend to furst such as: school work, sports, and primarily, my family. At different points, this task becomes more demanding due to the fact that I am constantly overwhelmed with obstacles to overcome. Unfortunately, everything cannot turn out sublime each time, which is the point in anyone’s journey that accidents are made, and from them minor problems can evolve into major
