Described within the vignette is a nineteen year old teenager named Brandy. Similar to girls her age, Brandy has difficulties dealing with her body image and self-esteem. For instance, she experiences hopelessness, isolation, sadness, and anxiety that all contribute to Brandy’s acknowledgement of her physical appearance. She completely overestimates her body size to the point of taking dieting pills then defaulting to purging. During the typical day, the meals are scarce but healthy compared to a bad day full of unhealthy snacking. Lastly, her family predicament is not a supportive one at that. Her mother was obese so she constantly dieted while Brandy’s father illustrated signs of sexual interest although he never physically touched her.
The documentary Thin focuses on women who suffer from eating disorders in a treatment facility. Currently not many women are educated on the problems they may face when they have an eating disorder. Not only do women themselves understand what is happening to them, the people around them fail to understand why they may have these problems. Throughout the film we are able to focus closely on some of the patients more closely. The patients the film allows us to see closely are Polly, Alisa, Shelly and Brittany. These ladies are all of different ages and are all at different points in treatment.
Just about every cosmetic surgery has been advertised on television, billboards, and, arbitrarily, by the celebrities who elect to go under the blade. Although these are in fact surgeries that can potentially be dangerous, most of them are not emergent, or illness-based, surgeries; these people undergoing plastic surgery want to do so at their own risk and pay thousands of dollars to get these procedures. The improving self-image based reason for plastic surgery, unintentially, gives plastic surgeons a negative, superficial connotation and puts these patients getting surgery in unnecessary danger. One procedure in particular caught my attention: liposuction. This surgery is considered a norm in cosmetic surgeries done, but has many complications that are overlooked for the satisfaction that the procedure brings.

Eating disorders are described as an illness involving eating habits that are irregular and an extreme concern with body image or weight. Eating disorders tend to appear during teenage years, but can develop at any age. Although more common in women, eating disorders can affect any age, gender or race. In the United States, over 20 million women and 10 million men are personally affected by eating disorders. There are many different causes of eating disorders such as low self esteem, societal pressures, sexual abuse and the victims perception of food. Eating disorders are unique to the sufferer and often, their perception of themselves is so skewed, they may not be aware they have an eating disorder. Media, for quite some time now, has played a significant part in eating disorders. Magazines with headlines ‘Summer Body’, or ‘Drop LB’s Fast!’ attract the attention of girls who may be insecure with themselves. Television productions such as the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show or American’s Next Top Model, show airbrushed and photoshopped women who have body types that may be unachievable. Those who are suffering from eating disorders can suffer dangerous consequences, and it is important to seek help.
In the fourteenth century, thirty-three year old, “St. Katherine” starved herself to death. This illness is certainly is not solely a physical illness; eating disorders are mental illnesses as well. The documentary also introduces a young, fourteen year old girl named “Erin.” “Erin” is shown at the beginning of the documentary looking into a mirror and writing words like “fat, ugly, disappointment” on it because she felt those words described her. “Erin” was disgusted by herself, she hated herself, and it is clear to see that during this scene. Davis sat in silence while watching this part, in his and my later interview he expressed his sadness saying, “I hate to see someone hate him or herself to that extent. I feel like no one should have to live being disgusted by themselves the way she seems to be.” “Erin” had been starving herself for three months, leaving her at 20% below normal weight for her gender, age, and height. “Erin” was dying of malnutrition because of her irrational fear of fat. The irrational fear of fat that “Erin” obtained was not a result of her desire to be what she saw on the billboards, what she saw in the magazines, but because she was aiming to become so thin that she would look unattractive. “Erin” was controlled by her fears, by her anxieties because she was sexually abused, she admitted. Every single day women are faced with the questions of whether they are pretty enough, skinny enough, whether men are attracted to them, whether they can be loved or not, and whether people think they are beautiful. If you don’t resemble the images of those stunning Victoria Secret models and Fashion Week models, you suddenly become ashamed of your own body. It is a great life to have with the high pay, fame, drinking champagne on a yacht with famous celebrities and even being on the Vogue cover page. Fashion Modeling Industry has been the most influential source in our young women’s lives. Young girls and young women are seen eating as little as they can, even starving themselves at times to resemble those models. What they don’t realize is that they are contributing to the 2.7 percentage of 13- 18 year olds suffering from anorexia and bulimia. Susan Albers, a psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic said exposure to thin models is a great trigger in maintaining an eating disorder. When watching America’s Next Top Model or flipping through a Fashion magazine, these young women don’t apprehend that those models are either naturally slim or they are suffering from an eating disorder themselves, in other words, hostages in the dark hell hid behind those runway curtains. The growing number of young anorexia and bulimia patients, and the number of websites such as thinspiration, where girls put up pictures of their thin bodies clearly suggest that the fashion modeling industry do not at all bear any responsibility in providing healthy, realistic physical role models for young women.
