The Changing American Families Positive and Negative effects on Children American families have endured a plethora of significant changes since the 1900’s to include the family structure, marriage and divorce rates, cohabitation, childbearing, economic conditions, feminist movement, and etc. These important factors have both positive and negative effects on the health of the overall family as well as its members, especially the children. Recent and past researchers have investigated and performed studies that indicate substantial evidence that these modifications to the American families structure or the family formation critically influences a child’s cognitive, social, and emotional well-being (Amato, 2005). This paper will explain some of the advantages and disadvantages of children due to the numerous alterations to the American family since the 1900’s. The traditional American family structure in various homes in the 1900’s consisted of a husband and wife who cared for their biological children delivered out of their wedlock, also known as the nuclear family system (Wetzel, 1990). However, overtime the nuclear family structure all but diminished and alternative family forms have become the more common family arrangement. Now, numerous families comprise of single parent households, LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) families, In my personal opinion the main advantages to children would be the change in gender roles, better educational and job opportunities, and medical and technology advances made from the 1900’s. The main disadvantages would be the overall developmental negative outcomes that are associated with divorced, single parent, adopted, or cohabitating families.
