Is it right to chain up another human or call people names and think of killing people? Well this is a situation in the short stories “ The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe and “ The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst. In the short story “The Cask of Amontillado “ is about a man named Montresor and he is trying to get revenge on fortunato and trick Fortunato to come to his house to try some wine and then Montresor chains up Fortunato and buried him alive into a wall. Also in the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” there is cruelty to it is about the narrator has a younger brother that's disabled and is pushing him way to hard he dies . Writers use different literary devices depending on their style and what they wish their reader to get out of their work. One important literary device that is essential for a successful literary work is theme. Theme is the general insight into life that the author shares with the reader. There are a number of different methods from which an author can choose to present his/her theme. One common strategy is to communicate the theme through the use of mood; the overall feeling or emotion conjured within the reader. In Edgar Allan Poe's short story, "The Cask of Amontillado," and in Saki's short story, "The Interlopers," the mood evoked within the reader is used to communicate the short story's overall theme.

In one of Edgar Allen Poe's best-known tales of horror, "The Cask of Amontillado," he suggests that pride can be a very dangerous thing, when one is overwhelmed with it. Through the use of foreshadowing, irony, and symbolism, Poe presents a horrific drama of two men. One who will stop at nothing to get the revenge that he deems himself and his family worthy of, and another who's pride will ultimately be the fall of his own death. Fortunato falls prey to Montressor's plans because he is so proud of his connoisseurship of wine, and it is for the sake of his own pride that Montressor takes revenge on Fortunato. Poe utilizes the theme of pride and many other literary techniques such as foreshadowing, revenge, and irony, in order to create a horrific and suspenseful masterpiece.
A main theme presented in “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe is that Montresor shows obsession with the murder of fortunato. This is exemplified by Montresor’s precise planning, carefulness and slowness of speed in the process.

The birds do the complete opposite from distracting the story, they give more detail, hints, along with help the reader understand what is happening. If the birds were not included in the story, it would have been a different story. Not that much description furthermore foreshadowing would have been in the story.

During the story he has some happy moments with his brother, but his brother is also very selfish. Doodle pushes himself to his limits to try to please his brother. There are three types of irony used in this short story: verbal irony, dramatic irony, and situational irony. Using these ironies, Poe wants the readers to understand about Montresor’s “friendship” with Fortunato.

The first-person narration style of "The Cask of Amontillado" is essential in creating the original quality of the story. The reason this is so important in this particular story, is because when a sane killer, Montresor, is allowed to tell the story from his point of view, the reader gets a unique, disturbing look into the calmness of his mind. The audience can more clearly see how he thinks and feels, which the audience does not normally get in mainstream, commercial literature. The reason the narration style is so important to the tone of the story, is because it lets the reader become personally acquainted with the thoughts and intentions of the main character, and since the reader somewhat knows the outcome from the beginning, it allows certain ironies to make sense to the reader. Furthermore, were it told from a different perspective, I do not believe the story would have been as psychologically powerful.
An important element in any story is setting. Authors use setting to convey certain feelings brought on by the character’s surroundings. It also subliminally serves to illustrate the character’s intentions. In “The Cask of Amontillado” Edgar Allen Poe uses the dark, imposing setting to do just that, communicate the underlying theme of the story, being death, revenge and deception.
“When one door closes, another opens” by Alexander Graham is a common phrase and Mrs.Mallard experiences the phrase as the news of the death of her husband forced her upon this path. Mrs.Mallard knows that the death of her husband is saddening but looks forward to the life she will live for herself where she will need to only look out for herself and no one else. Mrs. Mallard opens the windows as a sign of the new door and the freedom she will experience living for herself.
