In The Book Thief, author Markus Zusak tells the tragic story of Liesel Meminger and her experiences in 1939 Nazi Germany. Zuzak incorporates compelling literary devices such as toe curling foreshadowing, personification, and vivid imagery in the form of simile and metaphors to grasp the readers’ interest. Zusak’s use of various literary devices helps to deepen the text and morals of the story, and makes the dramatic historical novel nearly impossible to put down.
“I am haunted by humans” (Zusak 550). The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is about the horrors of World War II. Liesel and her family help out an old friend by hiding a Jew. Liesel also steals her first book when she at her brother’s funeral. Liesel Meminger’s remarkable actions like feeling good when she steals a book and her family hiding a Jew help demonstrate why Death is “haunted by humans”.
Often, most people have never enjoyed the feeling of being abandoned by your close ones, relatives, etc. because it causes their lives to become more challenging and difficult. Many aspects of someone being abandoned by someone, can often have a long term-effect on the person’s overall well-being. In the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Liesel, the main protagonist of the story, is a character that is constantly throughout the novel being abandoned by both certain circumstances, as well as the
THE BOOK OF THE THING. In Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, the protagonist, Liesel Meminger, is trying to outlive the harsh reality that’s produced by the war. Liesel Meminger and several other characters attempt to cope with the stress around them, and aid each other along the way. In this novel, the power of words is an important element.
How does one write a book about the horrors of the holocaust and portray the German society as much a victim as the others? Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief published in the year 2005 does exactly that, weaving a story in its 552-paged glory and opening a window into the life of the little Liesel Meminger. However, that’s not it. It’s just the tip of the iceberg that The Book Thief really is. What makes The Book Thief truly a different book to come by is not its concept but its narrator. He says he can be agreeable, affable and amiable and that that’s just the A’s. What he says he definitely isn’t- is nice because quiet correctly Death never is nice. Yes, The Book Thief is narrated by the wry, often sardonic and darkly humorous but secretly compassionate, Death.
In 2005, Markus Zusak composed one of the most influential novels of modern day literature. His story is known as The Book Thief, a novel told from the perspective of Death. His role is to narrate the life of Liesel Meminger as a young girl growing up in Nazi Germany. Death begins the story at the burial of her brother in 1939, just one of many tragic events that will occur in her life, she is then given away by her mother, and has to grow up in the care of another family. For Liesel, this change catalyzes a quest to understand the power of words. This is because she stole a book at her brother 's funeral and desires to read it in honor of him. Her new foster family, the Hubermanns, and friends help Liesel on this quest. Death describes Liesel
“It’s out of service?” my mom said under her breath. with Cellena going over her minutes, and had her phone shut off just last week! Nobody heard from her the rest of the night…
One aspect of reading that I enjoy is getting so wrapped up in the story. When the character's heart pounds, my heart pounds. When they hold their breath, I hold my breath. It feels like I'm there in the story. I get absorbed in the plot and take in every detail. A challenge I have regarding reading is that I tend to stop in the middle of a series if the beginning of the book isn't very interesting. I want to read further, but I end up procrastinating until it gets lost under my bed. I am hoping to improve my reading this year by remembering to look up word I don't know. This will help me to better understand whatever story I am reading. My favorite text from last year was definitely The Book Thief. This compelling novel always kept me on the
In The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, beauty and brutality is seen in many of the characters. Rudy, Liesel, and Rosa display examples of beauty and brutality often without realizing what exactly they are doing, because it is a part of their human nature. Zusak not only uses his characters, but also the setting of the novel in Nazi Germany to allude to his theme of the beauty and brutality of human nature. The time in which the novel is set, during World War II, displays great examples of beauty and brutality, such as the mistreatment of the Jews. As a result of this time period, the characters have to go through troubling times, which reveals their beautiful and brutal nature in certain circumstances. Zusak uses his characters and their experiences to demonstrate the theme of the beauty and brutality of human nature in the novel.
“That is my playing mom.” I answered. She then closed the door and proceed to wash the dishes. My mom just complained about my playing and she usually never pays attention. I thought to myself. I soon began taking

As time evolves, so do the words that are essential for our everyday survival. The most obvious difference between humans and animals is our ability to master the art of speech. Often, people will say the “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”, a simple nursery rhyme that helps ease a bullied child from abusive words and taunts. But does that really help cure the emotional pain? Words can illuminate and motivate the minds of people but can also shadow their self-esteem through psychological trauma. In The Book Thief, we see how fundamental words were to shape the reality of millions of people caught in the fire of World War II.
Reading a book is in many ways the same as exercising the muscles in your arm, as you are feeding your brain new information and ideas of life. Life is short and I believe that you should always be positive and do the things that you want without people telling you that you are wrong. The following Novels have taught me various aspects, which I have and still am using to make my life a memorable one as well as a positive one.
I rush down the stairs, grab a banana, and rush out the door. The bitter cold wind bites at me while I wait for the bus. Then it hits me, I left my computer inside! I dash inside, ignoring my step-mum’s criticism, and grab my laptop. As I grab my laptop, I see the bus go by.
The house phone started to ring. “We have a house phone?” I questioned myself rubbing my eyes giving off a weary sigh. When did I fall asleep? I headed downstairs and it stopped. Again it rang and I guessed it was on the bottom shelf hence lack of usage. Pulling off the dusty cloth I grasped the telephone and answered.
