Upon beginning this course I have been employed for a number of years at a daycare, elementary school, and middle school. I have had quite a bit of experience working and communicating with children of all ages, races, ethnicities, socioeconomic statuses, and academic abilities. I have worked as a special education paraprofessional, ISR liaison, and have had office work duties where my responsibilities were to call home and speak to parents. Another of my experiences as a cosmetologist has allowed me to improve my communication skills with all different types of people. While reading, The Banking Concept of Education, I was able to connect what Paulo Freire called “the banking concept,” to what I had witnessed in my years of employment in the public school system. There are plenty of limitations that we put on our students and expect them all to learn certain information in the same manner and have the same outlook on life. Teachers that I have worked with also have restrictions that do not allow them to explore different ways of providing beneficial instruction for every student. Deficits on our students, teachers, and classroom resource have produce a kismet for continual intolerant learning and teaching. Paulo Freire’s “problem-posing education,” contained ideas that prompted me to consider ways that I would alter instruction and education in general. Effective instruction would include real-world or real-life experiences where students have the opportunity to have hands-on, direct learning. My area of study focuses on science, so I would like to incorporate many field trips to educational learning centers, museum, nature centers, and any other locations where students can gain first-hand knowledge. I will also strive to introduce the content using many different aids and connecting the concepts to world events, as well as, the students’ everyday
