When you think of the expression “American Dream” what do you think of? Most people believe it’s to be wealthy and successful, some think it’s based on freedom, and some think it’s what leads you to become successful. I found myself answering this question, to me it means to be wealthy and successful with the “white picket fence” house and family. Everyone’s opinion ranges and maybe it’s because the American Dream is fading away, so in reality we are unsure what really the American Dream is. “…. the standards of the American Dream seem to flow more fluidly off the lips of people in high places…” O’Mara, stated. Due to this by what the author means is people with money live the American Dream because they can go to college, have the perfect family, and have the perfect job or not even have to work at all. When O’Mara’s curiosity played into place and he asked his barber, what her definition of the American Dream was, she responded with “Pfaat!” She then told him she believed it was to have a stable home, and to save enough money to send her children to college. …show more content…

It’s to be free, to better your opportunities and life, and lastly to be happy. When someone asks what the American Dream is we shouldn’t focus it all on economics and educations those lead to success, but we should base it on the multicultural and immigration culture we have. Many immigrants like Albert Einstein, Anne Elisabeth Claiborne, and Isabel Allende, shaped what the American Dream really is. So, when we think people should go back to where they came, it also means those immigrants listed shouldn’t be here, therefore America wouldn’t be what is today. Again, to answer my question of the American Dream, I’d identify it as people coming to create a society for them and their family, people to live and fulfill their dream, and to give their children the life they never had or want for them.
