Thanks to the rapidly occurring advancements in technology, educational tools like school books and calculators can’t keep up with how quickly new information is gained. Cell phones on the other hand, can keep up with how fast new information is found. Students need and deserve a proper education. If cell phones were to be integrated into school systems, students would be able to have access to unlimited portable knowledge that they can use to better their education. In her article Leiker explains that since she allowed cell phones in her class room the communication between her and her students couldn’t be better. She uses a cell phone application called Cue Remind that allows messages between students and teachers, publishing feeds, attaching files, and assignment notifications. This is understandable as most teenagers now a days would rather be on social media than anything else, but there is a simple way to solve this issue. Luckily, cell phones can block certain functions that distract students during class. There is a way to turn off social media and texting notifications so students are less tempted to the distractions. Another concern is that cell phones can be used to cheat on exams and quizzes. This issue can be solved easily, in order to prohibit students from cheating teachers can collect cell phones before a quiz or an exam. Students will try to cheat whether or not cell phones are allowed in schools, so there is no reason to use cheating as an excuse to not allow cell phones in schools. Also by allowing cell phones in school, students will learn how to keep cell phone use appropriate. Meg Ormiston explains in her article, “How to Use Cell Phones as Learning Tools”, that teachers should “Let them teach us about how to reduce the fear of theft or inappropriate use.” and that “Every student should be reminded every day about appropriate technology use, and what to do if the rules are broken.” These tips will help students from getting distracted during class and prohibit students from cheating with cell phones.
