Today our world revolves around our cell phones and social life. With this new technology people tend to forget how dangerous it can be. Young people especially, they believe that it is possible to do other things while driving such as texting and talking on the phone. Every year our roads are populated with new teenage drivers. Often times they don't realize the dangers of texting and driving. Most teens believe they are invincible and this can be a problem. Due to this mindset most teens have, it can get them seriously injured and even killed. Our highways are populated with millions of drivers each and every day. “In 2011, 1.3 million automobile accidents were caused by texting and driving. “Texting and driving makes you twenty-three percent more likely to be involved in an accident.” (Zakhareuski) Not only is it dangerous it is also very expensive “The studies found that those crashes cost $277 billion in economic losses and $594 billion in societal harm, for a total of $871 billion that year.” (Distracted Driving) This shows that texting and driving is not only dangerous but can also take a toll on our wallet. Millions of innocent people die each year due to texting and driving. Even reading a text message is dangerous “78 percent of teens and young adults say they have read an SMS message while driving.” (Distracted Driving | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration | Texting and Driving.) Reading a text message can cause you to take your eyes of the road and cause a major accident. “Drivers in their 20s make up 27 percent of the distracted drivers in fatal crashes.” (Distracted Driving | Facts and Stats | Texting and Driving.) The sad part about this is that most of these car accident can be prevented. For example Ashley, a 19 year old, was driving down the road when she got a text from her sister. Her sister was replying to a question that Ashley had asked. When Ashley opened the text she was not looking at the road and was distracted. Ashley died when she flipped her car and was killed on impact. This
