Television Show Analysis: Lost By Jack Shepard

Lost is an american television series that aired on ABC from 2004 to 2010. The show follows the passengers of Oceanic flight 815 after they crash land on a mysterious island. However, know one knows where they are because they have lost communication and where 1,000 miles off course when they landed. The passengers quickly discover mysterious elements of the island such as a monster appearing in the shape of a black cloud and a polar bear. In later seasons the show expanded its fantasy elements with elements of magic and time travel. The show’s main protagonist is Jack Shepard he develops into the leader of the group and a lot of the show focuses on his decision making as a leader. Early on in the show John Locke who is another central character explains to Jack that he thinks everything happens for a reason. He even says that it’s there destiny to be on the island. The show makes Jack look like the leader from the very first episode. The show opens with Jack in the aftermath of the plane crash. He goes straight to work getting people together to help others. He saves one man’s leg from a piece of debris, and a pregnant woman from the wing of the plane falling on top of her. From there Jack brings the group together to survive. He represents a very unselfish attitude, and becomes the moral figure of the group. That’s what puts him into a leadership position, and the survivors start to look to him for guidance because he is so willing to help people. In real life morals and ethics are two characteristics that are considered to be one of the top characteristics in a leadership personality. Dr. Sunny Giles took a survey to show what people considered to be the best characteristics of a leader. She said that “a leader with high ethical standards conveys a commitment to fairness.”(Giles) In her survey the number one characteristic was high ethical and moral standards. That said, there are moments where Jack doesn’t have the greatest morals. In the episode “Confidence Man” Jack and another character torture information out of a survivor. These actions were justified in his mind because the man was hoarding inhalers that an asthmatic girl by the name of Shannon needed to survive.
