“We’ve lost control of our relationship with technology because technology has become better at controlling us” (Bosker 58). In this quote, Tristan Harris, a former product philosopher at Google, describes how technology is advancing at a rapid rate and how it is becoming increasingly challenging to adapt to such changes. This rapid advancement of technology is taking the world by storm. Some characteristics of human reaction to these changes in technology are apparent in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein such as: ignorance, rebellion, and chaos. Thus, the companies keep updating their technology and sending it out to the average consumer. The average consumer likes the product, but they do not know that they are becoming addicted to it. A former employee at Google, Tristan Harris, believes that “designers [need] to adopt a ‘Hippocratic oath’ for software that, he explains, [that] would check the practice of ‘exposing people's psychological vulnerabilities’ and restore ‘agency’ to users” (Bosker 58). Harris is the co-founder of Time Well Spent, a movement to align technology with our humanity, and he was considered to be the closest thing Silicon Valley had to a conscience. These giant tech companies know that what they are doing is not commendable or moral in any way, but they continue to push the new and better technology. Technology giants such as Google, Apple, and Samsung are starting to grab hold of everyone’s attention and are suffocating people with their newest and latest technologies. Earlier in the essay, it was said that a definition of monstrosity is something that is “offensively wrong.” This definition is a perfect explanation of what these technology companies are. There have been advancements in technology in the medical field and in the safety field in general. The different automotive companies have made cars safer for the consumer. It has gotten to a point where the government is making the automotive industry as a whole have different qualifications for their safety features. The ironic part of the new use of technology is that it is being used for substance abuse or different addictions. The new technologies “which involve the delivery of evidence-informed practices via computers, web-based applications, mobile phones, wearable sensors, or other technological platforms, are rapidly being developed and tested for efficacy in individuals with substance abuse and dependence issues” (Ramsey 471). These new technologies that people with addiction problems use to help stride past their addictions are so beneficial and are in no way, shape, or form harmful or monstrous in any way. The problem that the average citizen faces is that there is so much technology in the world that is not beneficial to society that it is hard to figure out what is good and what is not. Obviously medical technology is a must because they save lives all the time. Safety features in cars and other vehicles are also extremely beneficial because they also save lives all the time.
