Once an individual becomes an educator, it is their duty to coach and help demonstrate as mentors. Mentors then become involved in the fundamentals of student growth where the art of learning is never over, especially for the teacher. Teachers can use a lesson plan to help facilitate student learning in which students collaborate with their mentors to establish a relationship with the mentors and then teachers and students become active participants in the learning community. There is always something to learn from the students, from other educators, and from the world in general. Dedication is at hand in order to establish a clear baseline between the students and the teachers. The relationship between them helps the educator meet students in at their points of need. The educators must stay dedicate and treat their students with respect. That is where my education of philosophy starts. Education becomes the starting foundation of human interaction. I have viewed the student-centered philosophies and I would consider myself somewhat having a combination of progressivism, constructivism, and humanism philosophies in the classroom. From my own personal experience, I have found that the students have a large impact on how much teachers appreciate them and acknowledge the art of teaching. To this day, I still enjoy being in a classroom knowing that the instructor enjoys what they are doing and how they are doing it. My former kids from my past job at the day care loved when I was running the summer program because I stayed connected with them and interacted a lot with my class. ... the curriculum, I would prefer teachings on everyday matter that students might need for future experiences. For example, I would love it when professors or teachers would throw in a story from their own personal experience relating to the subject matter. Not only does it make the class fun and more interesting, but also makes you think as a student that this teacher is reliable and they know what they are articulating. I think that teaching and learning becomes a reciprocal development between the student, and the teacher therefore must form a partnership. Education should be one of the most important factors in student learning and developing. It enriches the process of ongoing growth for them. Every child has the ability to learn. I believe the purposes of education are beyond and essential for students, to not just lead a successful life, but to also live life.
Everyone’s witnessed a teacher in action in one form or another. Whether they sat in the classic classroom learning their numbers from the chalkboard or were engaged in an individual activity guided by a mentor in the field, every time there is a teacher present. Growing up, this was my perception of teacher, that everyone could be one. And while I still believe there in truth in that statement, my own studies and setting off on the path to becoming an educator have shown me that some of the finer details of teaching have been glossed over from the student’s point of view. Education is a field where it is constantly evolving and teachers improve with the more experience they acquire. I believe that my philosophy will always change to reflect my progress as a teacher. This philosophy will include the purpose of education, the role of the educator, the relationship between teachers and students, the classroom climate, and my personal curriculum designs. The purpose of education in my point of view is for students to be acknowledged of their special abilities and to build upon those talents to encourage critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration for the success of the individual student.
My personal philosophy of education is centered on my desire to help students accomplish lifelong goals, and to help them understand and function in the world they live in. I want students to learn academic material and develop the ability to relate that material to their lives productively. The school I teach at promotes academic rigor, which I feel is very important, but I prefer to promote academic in addition to social rigor due to my students and their disabilities. Education should be all about developing the mind to letting students just be themselves (Wiles & Bondi, 2007). My philosophy of education relates more towards realism, idealism, and experimentalist, in which I believe connects with the style of education I learned as a child and the type of educational system that I teach in now.
When I am teaching in a high school someday, what philosophies will be evident in my classroom? What methods will I use to reach my students? In my present education, I am beginning to think carefully and deeply about these issues. From what I have read and learned and from comparing various philosophies with each other, I have come to realize that I am a strong essentialist, and I also see many strong points in progressivism and behaviorism.
In today’s educational system, multiple philosophies exist. Each teacher instructs based on what they think is most effective. The five philosophies that are mostly used today include the following: Essentialism, perennialism, progressivism, social reconstructionism, and existentialism. A significant amount of teachers teach in their own styles involving one or multiple of the philosophies mentioned above. My personal philosophy of education involves a student centered classroom. What is covered in class should be the interests of the students’. Doing this will keep the students focused on the material being taught. I know that as I grow and learn as a teacher my theory on education will change and grow with me. During this fast paced eight weeks writing course, I have learned an endless amount of information that would benefit me throughout my entire life. First, I have learned that in order to produce a well written paper, I most first find a topic that I am passionate about. Writing about things that I have a passion for have helped me write more efficiently. I no longer spend unnecessary time figuring out what I want my message to be, the words flow naturally. As an educator, I believe that all learning must start with each individual person and what they bring with them to the learning environment. I value life-long learning and believe that each of us holds valuable information and will make contributions that will benefit all learners and our classrooms. I believe that all students must have instilled in them a sense of competence as it is related to their experiences and without feeling competence in their own experience, they have nothing to build on or to grow from. I believe teachers should serve as role models and be the center of a classroom. In order to maintain that students stay on task and are all on the same page, the teacher needs to serve as a guide and direct the students. I do not believe that students learn best in a textbook based setting, but that textbooks are important when referencing material. I believe all students learn differently and look for new ideas or ways to teach lessons and concepts, so that my students can learn as effectively as possible. I also believe that a teacher teaches much more than the subject. It is very important for students in my classroom to something other than the subject that I teach. Education is a very important aspect of our lives. It is our education that makes us who we are and determines what we become. Therefore, education is not something to be taken lightly. As a teacher, my goal will be to provide the best possible education for my students. Every student is unique. I must see students for who they are individually and respect their ideas and opinions. Each student has a different learning style. I must take this into consideration because I want to provide a constructive learning opportunity for every student. I believe that every student has the potential to learn.
I could go on at length, discussing all aspects of my praxis as an educator, however, that would lead to a paper of excruciating length. These aspects of my teaching pedagogy that are delivered in this praxis statement are those that I feel strongest about upholding. It is important for educators to value their students and the perspectives and cultures they bring to the classroom. Student-centered education is what I find to be the key to great teaching, and overall, is the greatest way to allow students to value and grow through their own self-exploratory and self-directed education. Valuing and appreciating each of your students is what makes teaching such an enlightening, uplifting profession.
When I reflect back to the beginning of this semester I am astonished at how much I have learned. English 124 has been a real eye opener for me. Not only have I grown as a writer, but it has challenged me to become more of a critical thinker. In the class we have read many articles on diverse topics, studied theories of history’s greatest philosophers of education, and wrote various styles of papers.
In all, there are a myriad of teaching philosophies that educators have. Personally, I consider setting clear expectations for students and creating a respectful environment, acting as a facilitator in the classroom, creating relationships with students and their caregivers, and using positive reinforcement to be the most essential in order to create a positive, effective, and safe learning environment for students. Without using these philosophies when interacting with students in the classroom, I do not know how I would begin to attempt to teach them. In my future classroom, I plan to use different strategies to implement these philosophies in my class every day as well as continue to learn about new ideas about how to promote learning in a supportive, encouraging way.
My main goal as a teacher is primarily to provide students with the knowledge that will help them further excel in their everyday lives, but also to teach students to apply the knowledge they gained and take advantage of opportunities that will enrich their lives. Many times, students learn better when they feel a certain subject is relevant in their lives. I feel that it is important to have a curriculum that is based on the student’s interest, experience and capabilities. Having a textbook integrated in a curriculum is important, but a student will have a better understanding of the subject area when experience is involved. Although there are many different techniques to education, I feel that the philosophy of progressivism and essentialism best fits my style and belief of teaching. These teaching philosophies focus around student needs, democracy, and the basics of education.
