Students are the future of our world, they really are. Society pushes them to “do well” in school for the knowledge, seeing as knowledge is power. But, how are we treating them in this modern era? Our education system is not abysmal but there sure is room for improvement. The education system is flawed due to teacher tenure, affirmative action, and a weak curriculum. This society shouldn’t by stand these flaws.
First and foremost, teacher tenure is the ruling that restricts the ability to fire teachers. In an article listing the argument for teacher tenure, it states, “…this job protection makes the removal of poorly performing teachers so difficult and costly that most schools end up retaining their bad teachers”. “Students/workers who are put into a position through affirmative action often are not fully ready for the task…it lowers self-esteem” (Mount Holyoke 2017). Affirmative action highlights stereotypes and racism because people given a position purely because of affirmative action often are not qualified for the task, and the idea that all people of that race must be ‘stupid’ or hold a minority status is propagated. A step further, it supposes that all people of a particular race are from the lower class. Now, people of the opposing race are expected to act brighter because “privilege”, putting stress on these individuals because of the implied stereotype. Not only emotional stress, but financial stress is also apparent due to affirmative action. In the passage for Left Behind (Sheff vs. O’Neil) it states, “‘Sure, the built magnet schools. But they neglected some of the neediest kids in the city… in the whole effort” (de la Torre 3). Funding for underprivileged towns is neglecting unaided kids that are excluded from magnet schools due to the lottery engineered magnet school entrance method that aims for racial integration. A better education is the only way to help these kids. Affirmative action does not only employ for assistance but integration, supposedly promoting diversity.
