Tattoos have become a large part of North American culture since the last decade. They are seen as a way to express one self and a means of art on the body. Although it has been around for many years, they have been seen as taboo in the society. However, it was not illegal many workplaces have policies against tattoos, they would refuse to hire any persons with tattoos. The question driving this paper becomes what are todays tattoo policies compared to the past and how have they changed. Todays society although more accepting, there are still many places which discriminates against such views. Many workplace policies still go against having any tattoos visible to the consumer’s eye. There are many causes where an employee or applicant will take the workplace to court for discrimination and prejudice. On television and in books only criminals would have tattoos. In this present day and age tattoos are viewed as a way to express one’s self in an artistic way, or it is used for fashion. Many celebrities and famous individuals have tattoos to increase the positive outlook. Despite this often times many applicants and employees with tattoos are often viewed differently and rejected, despite their qualifications for open positions or desired jobs. In Aimee D Ellis’s journal “A Picture is Worth One Thousand Words”, she talks about how applicants with body modifications are prejudiced against. There is a Facebook group called “Tattoo Acceptance in the Workplace (Ellis, 2015),” which has many stories about people who have lost job opportunities due to their tattoos.
