Poetic devices are used by authors to portray their attitude towards a certain subject. The poetic devices of imagery and tone in the poem, “Sestina for the Sin”written by Tara Betts conveys her attitude towards the subject of Black people treatement as being unjust and sicken. Through the use of the poetic device imagery Betts demonstrates her feelings as being sicken. The poem’s main focus is the “burning alive of black human being.” The way they are burned in front of their families as families watch and can’t do nothing to help their loved ones as they slowly die. As if being burned alive isn't enough, in that many Black people were given a lynching without a proper trail because of their skin color. The sight that unfolds before them as “lost head, missing limbs, burning, a lynching.” Imagery is shown as its describes the horrific sights that unfold during a buring an da lynching. The way that Black people are unfair and unjust as they weren’t being accepted to the community and always seen as murders, especially the men. Everyday was a struggle for those of color due to the racism that occurred. Black people never wished to be the way that they appear. “This is what happens at a lynching. This is what happens when you are dark.” The word “dark” demonstrates how Black people were described as and that because they were Black there was only one path that they follow regardless of how much they try to change it. Those who were racist towards Black people saw that they were a waste to society and therefore killed them. Black people never understood why it was that they were being killed as they were, “A dark sin obscures reason”.
