Taiwan: The Silicon Island Society
Silicon Island is a nickname given to the island of Taiwan because of its technological hub located in the city of Hsinchu, which is a near replica of Silicon Valley in California. Hsinchu is located on the Northwest coast of the island and is bordered by mountains and the ocean. The city has a population of 370,000, which is made up of various ethnicities (www.taipei.org). Hsinchu is comprised of indigenous Taiwanese, Southern Fujianese (Chinese), Hakka immigrants, Japanese and a few Dutch and Spanish immigrants. The ethnic group’s cultural differences and traditions are respected and encouraged. The principle religions in Taiwan are 93% Buddhism, Confucian, and Taoist, 4.5% Christian and 2.5% other (Business Source Premier, 88). The official language of Taiwan is Mandarin Chinese yet many other ethnicities speak their native languages. English is taught in schools and is spoken by most of the employees involved in the “Silicon Island” culture.
Silicon Island was conceived in 1981, when the Hsinchu Science-Based Industrial Park was constructed (Kim, 181). Many Taiwanese had worked in Silicon Valley in California and had grown accustomed to the lifestyle that was offered. In order for the government to lure back its scientists and industrial intellectuals, tax breaks and low cost housing were offered to them if they returned to Taiwan. Hsinchu became a replica of Silicon Valley, from the architecture of the houses to a beach volleyball court located outside one of the businesses. I arrived at the Hsi Lai Temple in the city of Hacienda Heights around 3:00 p.m. on March 7, 2014. Although I am Chinese, I have never been to this temple before because my family does not practice Buddhism. This is my first time collecting data about the His Lai Temple. This method is referred to as participant-observation which is, “the anthropological method of collecting data by living with another people, learning their language, and understanding their culture” (Arenson and Miller-Thayer 521). The temple is built on a hill top. After driving up the long hill into the parking lot, I found that before entering the temple, I walked up many stairs. In the brochure For Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple, it said that the name Hsi Lai stands for “coming to the West”. The temple, which was founded by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, signifies the dedication of Taiwan’s largest Buddhist organizations called the Fo Guang Shan. It took ten years to build the temple and was completed in 1988. This $30 million Temple on 15 acres of land was financed by donations from Buddhist devotees from around the worlds.
Hawaii’s political economy went through some major changes. The development of plantations and tourism paved the path for how Hawaii’s economy is today. I will discuss how tourism, ethnicity, gender and education both constrain and enable opportunities in contemporary Hawaii.
Sinification, or the fusion of Chinese culture, became an important aspect due to the rise of the kingdom of Silla. Through this sinification, Buddhism was introduced and was even supported by Korean rulers. In addition, the Silla formed an alliance with the Tang dynasty in order to destroy their rivals, the Paekche. This enabled them to unite Korea under one government. Sinification plays an important role: the Silla want to become just like Tang China. Koreans read Chinese texts, have the same fashion as Chinese nobility, and sent gifts to Chinese emperors. This enabled the Silla kingdom to receive benefits such as being involved with trade through the Silk Road, which allowed the exchange of culture and technology as well as the increase in trade and commerce. The prosperity of the Silla is shown through Korean Dragon Roof Tiles. These roof tiles were beneficial, because they did not catch on fire unlike the traditional thatch roofs and provided a sense of security. It provided this safety, because it believed to ward off evil spirits as well as bad things from happening.

As the United States economy grows and technology advances, many areas such as San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and New York City embrace tech companies with open arms. However, it turns San Francisco, once an affordable place, into a luxurious and costly city for people who earn six digit pay checks. The Golden Gate City currently tops the chart for the most expensive homes in the nation. Even techies rent are increasing each month. Past the plated storefronts you will discover dwellings packed with elderly individuals and new outsiders battling with issues left by years of prohibition and segregation - unemployment, wellbeing issues and substandard lodging. (PBS, pg 12). Center Chinatown itself, restricted by its ability to develop, no more serves as the major local location for the Chinese of San Francisco. Numerous have moved out of gathered Chinatown to the Richmond and Dusk locale. China also provided a labor force that is able to tackle both white-collar and blue-collar job positions. This made foreign companies rush both monetary and technological resources into China to utilize the manufacturing and development power. Both Microsoft and Sun have created research and development centers to implement and design software applications in China. Domestic companies are not far behind either, for example, China's own Evermore Software is on the rise to challenge Microsoft's office suite with its own.4
Singapore as a country has had various transformations throughout its history, however the period 1950 and 1970 was quite critical. Much of these changes had a lot to do with the development of trade and manufacturing. This is without forgetting the financial sector where the intention was to come up with a financial hub that could be used in economic development. Looking at the case of Singapore, we would say that it is a productive economy with a very high market competition. This observation has been further clarified by the Swiss International Institute for Management Development, going with their report that they released in the year 2001 (Chellaraj & Mattoo, 2009). In this study, we intend to evaluate the case of political economy of development in Singapore and examine the tensions between the state and various economic institutions. In additions to examining this institution, we would also like to examine how these variables have contributed towards the attainment of favorable growth rates and economic prosperity.
Taiwan has a very long history with China in its early years of colonization, and since China gave Taiwan to Japan during the World War II, Taiwan formed an autonomous government and wanted to gain political autonomy from China. The problem considering the autonomy of Taiwan has been around for centuries. On one hand, Taiwanese people claim their land was separated from the Mainland China for a long time and should be reasonable to gain autonomy, while the Chinese government says that Taiwan is still an inseparable part of China and should maintain unified. Many of us are concerned whether Russia has the right to claim Crimea as one of its lands, and the problem between China and Taiwan is similar. There have been discussions in Asia about whether Taiwan has the right to be independent, which is to gain political independence from China, but settling this complicated dispute is not easy. If wrongfully put, the economy of both lands could be harmed, and the worst case would be war between the two lands. Taiwan has the right to be autonomous, but the fact could be that they shouldn’t be autonomous. Speaking from different angles, it would be best if Taiwan can maintain its current relationship with China, if not even closer relationship.
