Over the last few decades, schools have become increasingly prone to violent breakouts. With the majority of suspects being students, schools have been thrown for a loop when it comes to the proper method of safety that must be implemented. The categories of violence vary wildly all across the nation. From dating violence, to bullying, and school shootings, the latter of which has been brought to the forefront of American politics, schools all across the United States are seeing more and more breakouts as time progresses. Many types of studies have been conducted in an attempt to uncover what causes students to act out in such violent manners, what role parents, teachers, and peers play, and what measures schools can take to provide a safer environment for learning. The first is, how does violence impact middle school students, and the second is, do students have an idea of a method of safety for the school? Student inputs are not taken into account, when they are the ones we as educators must look out for. We need more input for the students, and then the faculty and staff can build off of them. Because the topic of violence in schools is a relatively new topic, not many journals have done research on the topic. My study does not stop at how to better safety precautions based on the student’s view of violence and safety. It also is focused on their experiences with violence and how to better educate them on what violence is and how to recognize it. The significance of this study is huge. By including the students in the question of safety in schools, we will gain a greater knowledge on what safety means to them and what we can do, as educators, to uphold that. It may encourage other school systems to incorporate students in their decision to enforce safety. This is vital to the future of safety in
