Gun violence in schools is a very serious problem in America. More and more shootings are occurring, and no matter what has been done to try to prevent these shootings they still occur. The current methods being utilized to prevent gun violence in schools are not very successful, because school shootings are still occurring. To better prevent gun violence in schools and in general the United States must reinforce gun knowledge, security, and the laws that are already in place.
Homicide, with an average of thirteen children per day, is the second leading cause of death among America’s youth. Contrary to popular belief only 2% of this violence occur on school ground (“School-Associated Violent Death Study”). With this in mind, should teachers be armed? A gun in the home makes the likelihood of homicide three times higher, suicide three to five times higher, and accidental death four times higher (“Protect Children Not Guns”). A school is no different: the more guns the more need to use them. The idea behind arming teachers is to add safety. If only 2% of homicides occur on school grounds, guns being allowed would only increase that percent. Guns would add danger, fear, and stress to an already chaotic environment.
In this article Emmett Tyrell informs us about gun violence in schools and what the NRA has proposed to stop the gun violence, and mass shootings across America. While the gun control debate rages, many schools have become war zones, and all school zones are vulnerable. The National Rifle Association's has come up with a 225-page report contains dozens of recommendations to improve safety in our nation’s schools. The NRA’s National School Shield program will train and enable school personnel to carry firearms to protect our nation’s children.
Like Mr. Cuellar said “ Being an US Customs I know any one with a gun in a shooting will help out to, there is more good people then bad and together we can take them down , that’s why I am with guns allowed in school campus , for the reason that I am also a father and care for the safety of my family members”. As he mentioned it can also be protection for oneself when you encounter a problematic situation. There are good reasons why we should allow them but there is more bad ones than good. Some people say that they’ll feel more protective if they have a gun with them , knowing someone you don’t know has one. If guns would be allowed under strictly rules and would have a lot of training and permissions / test people have to go through maybe like that I will be safe in school with guns
School shootings have the ability to be stopped. They are largely one of the worst repeated tragedies our great nation has endured, and they should be stopped today! No terrorist wants to go out in his/her infamous blaze of “glory” by failing in their attempt. Arming educators has the capability to end school shootings in this decade. “And I haven’t even touched upon the pure deterrent effect of a potential mass murderer having to worry one of his targets might be armed” (Concealed Weapons). This quote presents the very real possibility that just if teachers are armed, future shooters will reconsider and possibly not attempt it at all. Providing this overwhelming deterrent in the foremost thoughts of a would be murderer emphasizes the positive effect concealed weapons operated by teachers could
The cons to having students carrying guns in the school setting can be argued at great length, but there are two main points against students carrying in schools. The first main point is the fact that students could cause more harm at a school if they were to decide to go on a shooting spree. This point makes sense strictly due to the fact that having large groups of people in a single or relatively close space makes shooting people easier. The second point is people feeling unsafe in class could discourage or
When a student wakes up every morning and commences to get ready for school, the last thing they should be worrying about is if they could be caught in the middle of crossfire between weapons within their own school. With allowing teachers to carry guns in school, there comes a lot more discipline in the classroom because teenagers are unpredictable. At any moment, a student could get hold of the hazardous weapon and cause chaos. In a recent article conducted by Michael Hansen, he stated accurate concerns that come with such an impactful decision. Hansen stated, “In fact, it is almost certain that easier access to guns in schools would pose a greater overall threat to student safety that the current threat of mass shootings in schools” (Hansen). This concept is extremely
Of all the places in the world, you would think that a school is the safest place for a child to be, but it is changing. Throughout the years there have been many school shootings that make people believe it would be better if teachers could defend themselves and their students by having a firearm. I don’t believe teachers should be allowed to bring firearms to school. You have to look at both sides; I believe you can’t fight fire with fire. Yes it may protect students in certain cases but it also causes way more problems. “In 2013, legislation was introduced in at least 33 states related to arming teachers or school staff, but of the more than 80 bills introduced, only Alabama, Kansas, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Texas enacted laws related to public schools”.- Jackie Delpilar, Amy Slanchik, and Justine McDaniel.
There are many different views concerning the possession of weapons and firearms on school property and the actions that should be taken to better protect the children attending school. Many people seem to either clearly be for or against these ideas of this policy. Furthermore, people either feel it is necessary to arm the staff of the school to stop potential threats and others believe that guns have no place in schools unless they are carried by the protecting police officer of the schools.
Every school has more than one way to protect its students against possible threats. For example, police officers make sure that no unauthorized figure enters the school, and the cameras are the eyes of the adults to see if anybody has snuck in drugs or weapons. Unfortunately, the cameras might become hacked to change or erase footage, people can break into the school during the night to hide drugs or weapons and the on campus police officers could get shot. We have seen on tv and in newspapers that locking the door and keeping the lights turned off have not been enough to protect the teacher and students in a classroom safe. If there is a restriction on the known location of the hidden gun, and the teacher takes many tests to determine if they have the mental capability to have a weapon in the room, the teachers should get to carry guns in school.
