The progress made during the 21st century makes it easy for heterosexuals to forget that homosexuals still face persecution on a daily basis, despite gaining marriage equality in several western countries. Microaggressions and heteronormativity in the workplace in addition to physical acts of violence committed by others can have detrimental effects on LGBT individuals. The economic, physical, and mental well-being of homosexuals is constantly threatened by the stigma surrounding their identity and several types of discrimination.

The “social stress model” explains that social stressors including discrimination, harassment, stigma, familial expectations, or religious obligations are responsible for the higher rates of mental illness in LGBT community members (Source B). Heteronormativity forces people to come out because everyone is assumed to be straight and it promotes the idea that the LGBT subpopulation isn’t equal to heterosexuals. Religious and conservative families have expectations for their child and being gay can result in familial rejection and even disowning a child. Denying one’s identity is so self destructive that homosexuals often end up coming out and suffering hateful language and face abuse from friends, peers, teachers, and even complete strangers or are driven to end their own lives. This social stress model is the reason why “Non-heterosexual men were found to be at a 4.28 times greater risk” for suicide attempts (Source B). Discrimination on the social and personal levels can be even more pernicious than that of the economic and physical levels because it interferes with the individual's thought processes and endangers their mental well
