Title: Awakenings (1990) Major Characters: Robert De Niro plays a patient with a catatonic mental illness, Robin Williams plays the Doctor, and Julie Kavner, which plays the nurse. Summary: This true story, which took place in the sixties, is about a doctor's extraordinary work with a group of catatonic patients that he finds deteriorating in a Bronx hospital. Under his determination, he insists on testing a patient with a drug that is administered to Parkinson’s patients; the patient positively responds to the stimuli and awakens from the catatonic state. After proof that the drug works, he is then given permission to administer the drug on the rest of the patients that are in the facility that has catatonic mental illness. She stood behind the doctor and believed that the doctor could find a drug that would cure the patients from being in the catatonic state. At one time the main nurse needed help when the patients all started coming out of their catatonic state after being administered the miracle drug and the nurses were in the nurse’s station watching television and literally sitting on their butt doing nothing. At that moment, I did think of some of the nurses that I have worked with at work, and it made me mad. There were plenty of patients in the mental health facility to be taking care of, rather than doing nothing. As I was watching the movie, I was hoping that the Doctor would be able to find a drug that would permanently cure the devastating disease that the patients had been diagnosed with. I wondered what the patients were thinking and going through knowing they were alive in their motionless body. I was also thinking of how it was physically impossible to be able to care for that many patients at one time in that catatonic
