Throughout The Graveyard Book, by Neil Gaiman, there are many different tactics used to show how intense and suspenseful the book really is. Neil Gaiman does an excellent job of creating a nail-biting mood during the duration of the book. Intense events and exquisite details contributed to Gaiman’s success of the doing this. The situations Nobody Owens finds himself in also helps, to make The Graveyard Book, a classic suspenseful fiction book.
In the text a background story regarding the “SLEER” was taking place. When Bod stumbles upon the lair of the SLEER, he discovers himself talking to a undefined figure. The SLEER begins to speak to him about their master. In the text it states, “ The SLEER guards the treasures. The brooch, the goblet, the knife. We guard them for the master, when he returns. It comes back. It always comes back.” (56) This background story helps add suspense because the SLEER claims that the protected items always come back when stolen which is weird. He had realized he had gotten himself into something he did not want to. On page 86 it states, “They were strong, though, inhumanly fast, and he was in the center of a troupe of them. They would be able to catch up with him before he could cover a dozen yards.” This statement shows that Bod is afraid the ghouls are going to attack him, or possibly eat him. They wanted him to convert into a ghoul, something Miss. Lupescu warned him specifically to stay away from.
