Salvador Dali, was born Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali i Domenech on Monday, 11 May 1904, in the small Spanish town of Figueres, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, approximately sixteen miles from the French border in a region known as Catalonia. His parents supported his talent and built him his first studio while he was still a child in their summer home at Cadaques. Dali went on to attend the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, Spain. He was married to Gala Eluard in 1934 and died on 23 January 1989 in a hospital in Figueres (Etherington-Smith, 12).

Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí I Domenech was born May 11, 1904 in the small town agricultural town of Figueres, Spain. The son of a prosperous notary, Dalí spent his boyhood in Figueres and at the family's summer home in the coastal fishing village of Cadaques where his parents built his first studio. As an adult, he made his home with his wife Gala in nearby Port Lligat. Many of his paintings reflect his love of this area of Spain. As an artist, Salvador Dalí was not limited to a particular style or media. Researching different artists has opened me up to a complete new perspective on Surrealism art. For example, looking at different artists history has helped me build a picture on the history of surrealism, as the artists had such great influences on what surrealism arts general idea was. One point I made that swayed me to believe this is the idea about ‘the un-conscious mind’ and how that was the idea that took surrealism off in the first place. Looking at different artworks and researching so deeply into surrealism as a whole, has helped me learn that ideas are not only flowing in your mind that your aware of but, there is also other ideas and thoughts that your mind is thinking of without you even knowing it. However when these ideas eventually come to your mind or concern you can present them in completely different ways, from using personas to express thoughts to using different artistic techniques. He had been what the critics call an eccentric genius, a self proclaimed madman, and had lived a life of fame and fortune, mingling with the zenith of society and living what is popularly known as the high life. He was renowned for his insanity, the king of the absurd, and this came through in his paintings as much as it did through what he said. Surrealism and the surrealist movement is a ‘cultural’ movement that began around 1920’s, and is best known for its visual art works and writings. According to André Berton, the aim was “to resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality into an absolute reality, a super-reality” (Breton 1969:14). Surrealists incorporated “elements of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and ‘non sequitur”. Hence, creating unnerving, illogical paintings with photographic precision, which created strange creatures or settings from everyday real objects and developed advanced painting techniques, which allowed the unconscious to be expressed by the self (Martin 1987:26; Pass 2011:30).

The second of the forms of scepticism revolves around whether Descartes is dreaming or not ‘I see so clearly that there are no conclusive signs by means of which one can distinguish between being awake and being asleep’. The aforementioned malign demon was Descartes third method of doubt as he realised God would not deceive him.

Through skepticism and doubt Descartes raised a simple yet complex question, what can I be certain of if I doubt everything? Struck by all of the falsehoods he had come to believe, Descartes set out to determine through reason what was certain and able to exist beyond doubt. In order for his habitual opinions and false knowledge to not interfere with his ability to perceive things as they truly were, Descartes doubted everything. In terms of the physical body, our senses tell us that there are external ligaments and matter that come together to produce a body. However, when we are skeptical and doubt all previous knowledge, we are then deceived by our senses and the physical body cannot be proven to exist. Even while doubting the existence of the physical body, Descartes was still able to project skepticism and have thoughts of doubt. There must have been a thinking thing thinking those doubts. For this reason, Descartes concluded that though he may not be certain that the physical body exists, he can be certain that he in fact does exist, “I am, then, in the strict since only a thinking thing that thinks,” (Cottingham 5). Thought has proven to be inseparable from “I” and there must be a self that exists. While nonmaterial, self is the intellect and faculty of thought. “I think, therefore I am,” Descartes concluded to be the single most certain fact and closest statement to an ultimate truth. We can doubt all previous knowledge and beliefs, but we cannot assume that we who are able to have thoughts such as doubts, do not exist.
