People eat food for many reasons. For example, taste, culture, cost, time, and emotions of people can affect what they eat. These foods provide energy for, growth, movement, thinking, and metabolism. Furthermore, a good nutrition can reduce the risk of obesity, heart disease, cancer, stroke, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis (Shearer). According to the National Institutes of Health, "more than one-third of all Americans take these supplements" (“Multivitamin/Mineral Supplements”). But, taking supplements and vitamin instead of eating healthy food, is not a suitable replacement for a healthy diet. But there are people that might have to take supplements and vitamin because they have a deficiency …show more content…

However, we have people that are lactose intolerant. This means that in their body, they lack an enzyme (lactose) and cannot break down lactose into glucose and galactose. They can still eat food that are lactose free and contain a lactose defense formula such as: soy milk, almond milk, coconut milk, or anything that have the word "lactaid" in it. Which means that they have the enzyme to make it easier for the digestive tract to digest this food and absorb beneficial nutrients from it. This is what makes them use supplements and vitamin to aid their body to break down dairy products. We also have people that are pregnant that lack iron and folic acid. Also, older adults and vegans need supplements and vitamin to obtain nutrients that they may lack. Otherwise, healthy people can get their nutrients from their daily foods. For example, dairy food is comprised of high protein, calcium, potassium, and vitamin D which is found in milk, and cheese (Shearer). Vegetables and fruits are common in low in fat, sodium, and calories; They also are high in potassium, fiber, vitamin C, and folate which is a B vitamin that helps in making DNA and RNA (Shearer). However, the vegetable group contains another nutrient, which is vitamin A. Example of vegetables such as carrots and lettuce. Example of fruits, such as apples and mangos. Macronutrients are the energy- containing, needed in higher amounts, also it provides calories, like carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Micronutrients are the non- energy containing, needed in smaller amounts, like vitamins and minerals, that doesn’t provide calories, which give us the energy in our human body (Shearer). We need the vitamins and minerals in our body to use the carbohydrate, fat, and protein. In addition, vitamins and minerals are part of the enzymes that speed up the chemical reaction in the body. Their deficiencies can lead to: fatigue, stunted growth, weak bones, and organ damage of the eyes, skin, and liver (Shearer). Although, micronutrients are involved in supplements and vitamins tablets. Supplements are not made for poor diet quality, example if you are eating fast food, and taking your supplement that doesn’t mean that you are in a healthy diet. Some people take supplements for nutritional benefits, but don't realize they could be getting more nutrients by consuming whole foods. For example, if you are going to a store choose the grains that has "whole grains" because it contains the germ, the endosperm, and the bran, also, because it's an important source of fiber, B vitamins, iron, magnesium, and selenium, but if you are taking for example a wheat germ supplement, you are losing nutritional
